Malachi, 3 DNPs Thus Far

Unfortunately Malachi hasn't gotten off the bench in the Kings' first three games. I suppose this could be spun as he made a wise choice getting drafted/paid when he could, if he's not good enough to get off the bench. If he'd led us to the Final Four again this year with better overall numbers, he could've been a lottery pick but does that put him in a better situation in the league (other than more $ in his pocket)?

Ennis and Malachi's early departures are the only two I've disagreed with, but they left when the getting was good. Looking back, I don't fault either for their decision because I don't think either was going to significantly improve his draft stock. Weighed against the risks associated with returning to college for another season, the potential benefit of jumping up a few spots into the lottery isn't always worth it.

I think Malachi will find a role and stick around the NBA for a while. Players with his length who can also shoot aren't rare in the NBA but they're not growing on trees either. Likewise, Ennis has career backup PG written all over him, and that's not a bad career to have.

Certainly not writing him off...but do you thinks this bodes well? Or do you think it's a non-issue on October 30th? It's one thing to get a few minutes in a game or two a la Silent G for the Pistons, and get a few shots up (in what may be garbage time.) I think it's another to get a DNP in three straight to start the season.

Rest assured though, I'm rooting as hard for him as anyone.

I tend to agree. As long as he keeps his head on straight, Mal will get a bunch of shots because of his combination of size, length, shooting, and ball-handling. Ennis, I worry a little more about because he's not really at an NBA level athletically. Of course, neither was Andre Miller. And he's been getting some minutes so far on the Rockets, so he's getting a good chance to prove himself.

He actually doesn't have three DNPs, just two, as he played briefly in one of their games. And yes, I think it's a non-issue at this stage.

BTW, the NBA is about the 2nd and 3rd contract.l, and being young enough to get them.

When is the deadline for the Rockets to decide on TE's contract? I still say he made the right choice to get out while he was in good shape, but the next deal is huge and he may not get one.

Yes, so finding meaning in anything they do there is pretty meaningless. Either way 3 games is just that 3 games. I don't think its any indication of how his NBA career will wind up.

The owner fancies his team a title contender; hence the 6 coaches is 5 years or whatever it is. They've had two good coaches in that time (Karl and Malone), and Joerger is pretty good too.

As many have said it isn't ideal but Kings, while not very good, surprisingly have a decent set of wings in Gay, Afflalo, Barnes and McLemore so not totally shocking he's stuck behind them I guess when you think about it.

More importantly, I hope he's working hard behind the scenes and continuing to develop to put himself in best possible position down the road.

You would have to think that they plan to trade one of their SG's. Maybe they are hoping that McLemore shows something and increases his trade value. Didn't they almost trade McLemore for MCW? He is on the block. Mali will get his PT.

I agree. Only 3 games. I was not totally surprised that Malachi was drafted, what with the history of NBA drafting, but that does not mean I understood him going so high in the draft. Looking at his year at SU, he had a few outstanding games, some of which came at the most opportune time (the NCAA tournament), but the majority of games he was just another player on the court, sometimes looking great and sometimes looking terrible (I remember a game where he was something like 0-13 from the field). He simply disappeared in some games. Like others have said, he certainly has the athletic ability to succeed in the NBA if he puts it together, and I wish him nothing but the best. But I also look at Grayson Allen who has improved each year at Duke and is, surprisingly, still there. I would have liked to have seen Malachi stay for a second year to improve on his consistency.
