Easy--he was exponentially a more effective coach than GRob, and he came close to maximizing what contributions he was able to get out of the players he had, even with subpar depth. I won't go so far as GO as to saint the man, or suggest that marrone didn't have a learning curve that was at times frustrating. But some people conveniently seem to forget that in year 2, we were totally pedestrian on offense and had limited depth. And yet, somehow that staff found a way to claw and scratch their way to wins, scoring a trio of late season road victories that pushed us over the top, culminating in an improbable bowl win. And that Rutgers win to get us to bowl eligibility was a war of attrition between them and us--a totally depleted team. There's an adage I'm about to poorly paraphrase about good coaches taking their'uns and beating your'uns, then being able to take your'uns and beat their'uns. Well, Marrone took over GRob's team, ran a bunch of players off who weren't willing to buy into what it would take to reverse the culture of losing that permeated the program, and made them instantly tougher and more competitive the first year. It didn't show up so much in the W / L column that first year, but we were exponentially more competitive that year than we'd been in previous years--certainly not the comedy of errors that were all too prevalent under the previous regime. I don't "hate" GRob the way that some do on this forum. I was never happier than when he was a lame duck, and scored that win AT Notre Dame. Was so happy for the guy to go out like that, when it was apparent that he wasn't going to be retained. But in retrospect, he got a TON of money and all he accomplished was that he ran the program into the ground. Worst four year stretch in program history, and he literally oversaw a stint where we became the worst--bar none--BCS program in college football. Given that, I certainly don't feel any reason to root for him like the OP. Kudos to him for scoring another job, but I'm not pulling for him.
