Marcellus Barnes in the portal

We all are aware that even SU & HCFB will lose some players to what is now the Wild Wild West of college football, also known as the portal.

What we also should be aware of, is that HCFB will do a great job of adjustments, and also bring in portal players of his own.

I wish Barnes the best. No ill feelings.

You have to look at it in the aggregate. How is it offset and what’s the rest of the unit look like?

Since this liberal transfer stuff started it’s been a net positive for SU.
Has it not also been a net positive for the schools we're trying to catch, thereby keeping us just as far back?

Let's be honest, we couldn't have been too much worse prior to the portal. Our talent was crap.

Before we use this season as an example of the portal helping, that was Fran and company more than anything. Most other staffs would not have brought in the help we had and we would've been bad. There's are reasons Fran has said he'll be selective in the portal.

I know a lot of people feel that way. I don't see it like that. Look at the guys you mentioned that helped us, and they certainly did help us. They are most likely late round draft picks and undrafted free agents. We aren't getting first round studs. But the factories are syphoning the early round guys from other schools, taking their difference makers and eroding their depth. Yes, the Ohio States will make mistakes here and there and get rid of a McCord they should keep, but think about how that transpired. Had they not been morons, he would've been their starter this year. We didn't steal him from them. The factories will keep who they want, cast off who they don't, and nab diamonds the lesser schools with good scouting identify and develop.
It’s a numbers game. Football is all about managing attrition. It used to be injury and academics, then kids leaving early for the nfl. Now it’s transfers as well; academics, not so much.

Talent circulating is a better thing than being locked up by 20 schools on their two and three deeps and scout teams.

End of the day kids want to play. And chasing a bag at a factory is no guarantee of success. Fran has plenty of examples to point to there. If kids want to leave for a payday, not much you can do about that, or should you if you can replace their production at a lower price.

We literally kept Gadsen, Allen and Wax here when they surely would have left had Fran not been hired. Why didn't the factories siphon them away?

NIL and the portal is a chaotic mess. We'll get some guys who are disgruntled at the factories. We'll get some guys who excelleed at G6 and FCS schools. We'll lose some some guys as well.

On balance, SU is benefiting from the portal. The results are indisputable.

Barnes was not an overlooked talent. He was a 4 star with plenty of P4 D1 offers. He chose to come to Syracuse to play under Fran. We don’t really know the specifics of why he is leaving but NIL is certainly a more than likely possibility. But this isn’t a case of finding a diamond in the rough and shining light on them. Barnes was a known commodity that would have gotten attention in the portal even if he played 0 snaps this year.
Did he have offers from Tennessee and Georgia?

This is why having a star recruiter is vital. That‘s been my first question for nearly every coaching candidate. Can they recruit? Even more important in this new nil world
Yep - there will be a certain level of churn unfortunately.

But if he’s homesick it happens - we saw this back in the 90’s and there wasn’t even NIL to deal with.
Homesick maybe 10% of the reason. The other 90% is Benjamin Franklin.

Bingo. I have a child who goes to college in Tennessee. 13 hrs door to door. It’s a long way from home. Half that time would be a lot easier (especially in that first year.)
And Chattanooga is even farther than that from Syracuse. Having said that, I know someone from here in Knoxville that's playing for Michigan next year. His family isn't hesitating about making that trip.

Don't share all this doom-scrolling at all.

We were one of the top teams when it came to the portal last year. Loads of transfers in from some of the top schools in the country. Several of them helped us a lot this year.

People want to play for Fran. Sure, we may get 'outbid' on some, but the loss of a home-sick CB with promise is just what it is: an event that portends nothing beyond the loss of a home-sick CB.

Most of SU’ s portal from last year are already back in the portal.

Yeah, we kept those guys. From what people said Gadsden was leaving if we didn't get McCord, so thank you Ryan day for being a moron and thank you Fran for being a magician. We won't lose every good player. Yes, we've been helped. But to think the portal is evening things between the haves and have nots isn't true. They've been helped too. Please list the starters the factories are losing that they want to keep.

The consensus is that liberal transfer has weakened the top tier schools.

SU is in the final CFP ranking. I don’t know what else to tell you.

There is so much that goes in to numbers. There is a reason he was a starter as a freshman. This hurts.
There will be others that hurt and could be worse. I'm most concerned about the young guys on the DL. We can replace a corner, have to prioritize where we spend money on retaining guys. I hope that's the case here or that he was a kid who was homesick.

No need for people to get worked up by this. Go read the portal thread, the volume of transfers from big schools who were former highly rated recruits is staggering.

We will probably lose more. We will gain some too. We'll be fine.

I think we are a small market team. We have to keep the guys we want while adding the right fits. I wasn't super impressed with our secondary this year. Losing a starter, a freshman starter no less, is not good.

it's standard operating procedure at this point, there will be some subtractions some additions and it's just part of the business at this point. We have a head coach who is well suited to deal with it. It's going to hurt at times but also open up opportunities for additions. Every roster will be fluid until guys can't move around for a few months, it's chaos really. Love it or hate it

Small market team is a good analogy. The factories losing a little underbelly hurts them less than us losing a young guy that could've been a starter for 2-3 more years.

Tell me the playoff isn't dominated by the top tier schools.

A small market team that starts a freshman has very little chance of holding onto that freshman. And if it's a homesick situation, then what are you going to do?

I'm more worried about Watson. But won't be surprised if he explores his value too.
