Marcellus Barnes in the portal

Won't be the last for sure. I really liked his potential thought he had play on Sunday type talent. Will be missed but can be replaced. Wish him the best of luck but if he goes to Tennesse then I hope he has an awful first game.

Played 5 games. Graded an average overall defender. Average in coverage. Failed as a run defender. Failed as a tackler. Had the highest percentage of missed tackles. 0 INTS. Only 1 pass breakups. Total of 133 snaps all year due to injury.
There goes Bees wrecking all the good crying and doom saying with actual facts ! Have we learned nothing, more good players will portal out but I have confidence Fran will bring even better players in ….. remain calm

I think we are a small market team. We have to keep the guys we want while adding the right fits. I wasn't super impressed with our secondary this year. Losing a starter, a freshman starter no less, is not good.
"super impressed" would not be the phrase I would use to describe the secondary either.

I wonder how Kerr graded out in his limited snaps. I know he had a pick and a pass breakup.

I don't think we saw enough of Barnes to know much other than he has talent enough to get on the field early.

Tell me the playoff isn't dominated by the top tier schools.
Those schools couldn’t rollout C effort games and win. Clemson had to play their way in with help, Bama out. UGA almost lost to GT at home. Look at Oklahoma and Michigan this year. USC. Washington.

The margin is closing. The days of locking up and stockpiling 85 5 and 4 stars are over.

100% retention rate is unrealistic. We didn’t have a flood of early announcements. It would be better if he stayed but it’s not the end of the world.

He had a arm/shoulder injury
I believe he was the one who in one of the games towards the latter part of the season tried to tackle an RB and held his head down & just took a vicious hit. Lucky to not be paralyzed. Curious if he's gonna be OK in the long run

Cant worry about this, there are going to be dozens of secondary players in the portal, some who have tons of experience, and some who used to have lots of stars, our NIL might not be what SEC schools are but we have depth and can surely bring in others. Certainly hate to lose a kid but this is not a position I worry about replacing, we need to hammer the portal but even with this loss the secondary is far less of a concern then D line and Linebacker.

We are middle tier in the food chain…we will get guys from lower tier schools and lose some to the big boys. Circle of life.

And get some guys who didn't make it with the big boys. And get some guys back who didn't make it with the big boys.

Kerr and Barnes graded about the same as a cover guy. Both average. Kerr was also playing a new position wasn’t he? The biggest difference was run support. Barnes had the worst missed tackle percentage at 37.5%, while Kerr was one of the best at 8.3% with Wax, Bellamy and Lewis being the only ones better.

What you just listed is nothing new. Alabama had a coaching change and still almost made the playoff the first year post Saban. Clemson lost forehead slap games and had close calls when they were dominant, see our win in 2017. Michigan was meh for years before Harbaugh and meh this year with him gone. USC has been inconsistent since Pete Carroll left. Washinton is not and has never been a factory. They had a magical year and fell back after losing their coach. Oklahoma fell back as soon as Lincoln Riley left. Georgia almost lost to an in state rival with a winning record. That's not proof they've fallen off.

What I see with the teams you listed is more influence by coaching changes than the portal. And as some factories have dipped a little, other factories have stepped into their place, Texas and Oregon.

So what’s your point, that the prior system was better?

Kind of fits the eye test and what I thought during games. I thought other corners played worse, and our safety play left a lot to be desired all year, which isn't the fault of the corners. Sucks to lose Barnes either way.

Barnes definitely wasn't ready to be a big time tackler yet but it's a big adjustment for him. Believe he hurt his collarbone or something like that with the second injury.

I guess it's a good thing there is a portal with a lot of players, in case he needs to be replaced.

Probably a good life decision if he's transferring to Vanderbilt. Great school, beautiful city and close to home. Rocky Top? Not so much.

Two of those three are likely back but one is up in the air. Need to let things play out but WR unit may look very different next fall.
Id take 2 of 3 honestly as a win. Ross has a ton of upside, JRS is a play maker and Pena turned into a stud. If one tries for the pros, I’ll root him on. I’d just be bummed losing any of them to the portal.

Any idea on if Zeed plans to return? We should have Tremble and Hornsby playing hopefully next year too.

Not sure he was actually that good just (correctly) gets extra credit for playing as a true freshman. Hopefully we can find someone better in the portal.

We need Robinson and Brown to identify some talented guys that are blocked at SEC programs and ready to step in here and play big minutes.
