Marcellus Barnes in the portal

Those schools couldn’t rollout C effort games and win. Clemson had to play their way in with help, Bama out. UGA almost lost to GT at home. Look at Oklahoma and Michigan this year. USC. Washington.

The margin is closing. The days of locking up and stockpiling 85 5 and 4 stars are over.
There's a reason why guys like Saban and Harbaugh ran away. They could see the writing on the wall.

This is why I love a staff of super recruiters. With the portal, they get multiple swings to bring in talent.

Id take 2 of 3 honestly as a win. Ross has a ton of upside, JRS is a play maker and Pena turned into a stud. If one tries for the pros, I’ll root him on. I’d just be bummed losing any of them to the portal.

Any idea on if Zeed plans to return? We should have Tremble and Hornsby playing hopefully next year too.

I believe the feeling is that Haynes will return but I haven't' heard anything concrete on that and to be honest nothing would surprise me. Wr is on track to very much be a strength again. Will certainly look different without Orande and Meeks and others but talent is there.

I know Pena was getting a lot of money to portal, too. Hopefully we hang onto him.

CircleYep - there will be a certain level of churn unfortunately.

But if he’s homesick it happens - we saw this back in the 90’s and there wasn’t even NIL to deal with.

Players come and players go, don’t forget Cuse ALL-ACC corner this year was an add from the portal in the off season.

What!!! We can’t compete though. We only won 9 (maybe 10 games) this year. We lost Barnes, we won’t recover. Oh crap, we also lost our kicker. This is terrible news. Even with the facts that last year we lost guys and replaced them with superior talent, I can’t help but feel like we are absolutely doomed.

Yeah, we kept those guys. From what people said Gadsden was leaving if we didn't get McCord, so thank you Ryan day for being a moron and thank you Fran for being a magician. We won't lose every good player. Yes, we've been helped. But to think the portal is evening things between the haves and have nots isn't true. They've been helped too. Please list the starters the factories are losing that they want to keep.
I’m looking at the results on the field and it sure seems like we’re seeing an “evening out”.

We have a 12 team playoff that includes Indiana, SMU and Arizona State. Seems like the portal has helped all of those schools break into the realm of the factories.

Plus, no one was dominant this season. Not UGA, not Bama, not Ohio State, etc. almost everyone lost to a non-factory at some point.

Look, I’ll change my POV if what I see on the field warrants it. I’m not dug in here. But as of now, I see a lot of evidence that the portal is creating more parity than we’ve seen in CFB in a long time.

it's standard operating procedure at this point, there will be some subtractions some additions and it's just part of the business at this point. We have a head coach who is well suited to deal with it. It's going to hurt at times but also open up opportunities for additions. Every roster will be fluid until guys can't move around for a few months, it's chaos really. Love it or hate it
Good point about Fran being able to handle it. Under the prior administration we would likely lose our best and replace them with lesser talents resulting in a doom loop toward complete irrelevance. With Fran we have a real chance in this environment.

There goes Bees wrecking all the good crying and doom saying with actual facts ! Have we learned nothing, more good players will portal out but I have confidence Fran will bring even better players in ….. remain calm
Yeah, those facts must be a critique of our coaches who chose to start him over Kerr and others. I think they know their business and who is good and who isn't.

Portal still is going to be a huge net positive with Fran around
This is a key season for that. We have had only two of his high school recruiting classes. And we have holes. And a monster schedule. Many on here are saying we won't be as active in the portal this year. I hope that isn't true. We don't have to being in 19 portal kids but of those, 12 played a key role this year. I think we need to at least match that this year.

Not my point, Barnes may develop into an all conference corner , my point is with the portal guys are coming and going , we shouldn’t overreact.

except that’s not happened under Dino. Lost some guys, gained some guys, roster improved incrementally year over year.

So what’s your point, that the prior system was better?
I think with a recruiter like Fran we would've been better under the old system. It's not the portal so much as it is the messed up version of NIL that has made the portal into something it wasn't supposed to be.

It's such a bastardized version of what everyone thought the court ok'd. It isn't sustainable or fair for all the parties involved. To have free agency twice a year verbally prepaying tens of thousands of kids and committing millions of dollars all through shady back channel handlers before seeing what value comes from their talent will bankrupt colleges, ensure players are constantly lied to and manipulated, and make sure thousands of players never getting a degree because they're chasing the dragon of the 4 year dream payout.

Dino ended his tenure just as the mess we now know as (and what I will henceforth refer to as the “portNIL”) really got going. I have no doubt that with him at the helm this past season we would have, at best, struggled to be bowl eligible, and at worst won 2-3 games. He did an ok job during his tenure, and the team may have improved marginally, but this new environment would have eaten him up. The new game is recruiting and retention which were not in my view his strengths.

This is why, flawed as it is, the NIL system works. It protects the colleges and universities themselves.

Once payment goes directly from the higher education institution to the student-athlete, we're done for.
