(in regards to challenges and loyalty) When he was recruited, it was support groups saying this is where you are going -- today it has changed to you are not going there

I think perception of program and university plays a major factor (and to an extent it always has) in todays recruiting -- now it seems more like it is not the kids making the decision, it is their peers and support group pushing them towards certain schools rather than where they may truely want to go. They may want to go to school A, and really like A - but their coach and friends do not see what is so hot with school A and try to coerce the recruit to school B (which the recruit likes - just not as much as school A).

I think that is one of the reasons we saw so much flipping this recruiting cycle nation wide. Kids are being guided towards one school vs another based on their support groups opinions and desires vs what may actually be in the kids best interest. Instead of supporting the recruit with their decision, they kind of throw doubt into the kids mind - and I think HCDM admitted that was his biggest challenge this year in his presser.

The man looked exhausted.

"The man looked exhausted."

I've worried about this for some time. I remember when he said during the season that he was looking forward to an off-week so that he could get out on the road and rejuvenate himself. It was like he needed to get away from the daily coaching grind, not good for someone who hasn't been an HC for long.

Today, when one would hope that he'd be full of exhilaration over landing this class, he looks...exhausted? When will he next look enthused?

Probably reading too much into this, but if he can't get any enjoyment out of this, he's not gonna be long for the job.

Talk me down.

Sometimes, when the hours have been long, the stress has been high, and the goal is finally here you are just exhausted. Hope he takes a few days off. Coaches earn a ton of $ but when you are fighting a bad perception nationally and a less than elite facility you need to work harder. Avis tried harder and they were # 2. What do you think #82 has to do to win?

I agree with you. But, just like it's bad form for a CEO to give off a vibe like he's seen the latest earnings reports, and they aren't good, it's bad form for a coach to not appear excited about the new players joining his program.

I also agree that DM has taken on a big challenge. I just worry that, if he's unable to enjoy a moment like a signing day presser, he may not be getting any enjoyment or satisfaction from his job. And people like that burn out, usually sooner than later.

Man...that is just sad.

Not s sad as you think...ESPN had a great article on that reaction. It was much more than just selecting schools...also found it interesting that she hated Saban because the first thing he promised her during the in home was"that her son was going to be a first round pick", nothing about he education, etc. She didn't like that Saban stereotyped her and the family.

I agree and posted this a long time ago. Doug needs to enjoy what he is doing so that his staff and players can as well. Who knows he may be loving it on the inside but on the outside what he projects needs to change. Im not saying he needs to blow Cotton candy up everyone ass but he at least needs to realize that he is the face of the program and to act accordingly. Show some enthusiasim some passion anything other than the doom and gloom that we see more often than not from him. If i were Gross i would sit him down and explain to him that as tired as you may be you represent this school and when you are in public i expect you at your best. Press conference was as bad as this class is good. One last point if this is his good behavior because he is in front of the fans and the press what is he like behind closed doors? According to the recruits he is great they all talk about how much they like him and the staff how they seem tight and getting along. To me and i hope this is true that is the real Doug. Maybe he just doesnt like the public stuff. If so a little PR coaching would help him out a ton. Still in my opinion this is the best class we have landed in years and an indication that if we can win and if he is supported by the administration with the "toys" the guy can recruit.
