What IF we never get above .500 this year? Then what? What if this team just struggles to win games this year vs teams on par with them or slightly better that remain on their schedule? Keep losing close? Then what? I know I am in the minority (and you all can feel free to pile on because I know most will disagree with me and most of you will call me a bunch of childish names because that's how some you debate things) but he broke a 7 game losing streak by beating Stony Brook at home a Div 1AA team, nothing to get excited about. It's tough to give a guy an extension based on the fact he is "losing close" and "has an exciting offense that is fun to watch now." Some would say where was this "style" of offense the first 3 years? Do the first 3 years not count? I understand it was a big rebuild job but its year 4, beat somebody! Is that asking too much? The bar can't be set any lower than it is for him and for Syracuse football. He better start tomorrow with beating Minnesota's "B" team! A loss there and there is no positive spin to put on that! And I don't want to hear the excuses! He better beat Minnesota. Let's be honest, IF SU loses to Minny, has a BYE WEEK, then loses to Pitt at home (a team they have beaten once in 10 years)...does Doug deserve an extension? Based on what? LOSING? Even if he wins a couple games vs some bottom level crappy Big East teams the final part of the year how can you justify giving him an extension? I don't see how ya can. We would be going backwards. Hell we would for all purposes be out of bowl contention by Columbus Day for christ sakes in my above scenario. Need to run the table almost. That isn't good! Coaches in a rebuilding process win more games as they stay longer on the job. Doug would have had his biggest success with Robinson's players and be getting worse with his own guys. It's a tough sell to tell people: Doug has been here 4 years, the record peaked in year 2 and now is getting worse each year but he is a good coach, nevermind the fact he doesn't win many games and is coming off a 2 horrible seasons. He is the guy to lead us going forward. I would be in no rush at all to give him an extension until he can beat some FBS teams on a regular basis. And IF (I said IF I am not predicting this next part, I am just saying worst case scenario, I have to point this out because it has confused people in the past) SU wins less than 5 games this year I don't see how in the world you give him an extension at all and they must keep all their options open. I would rather go into the ACC with fresh blood than a guy who struggled to win games in the Big East over 4 years. It's year 4 for Doug, no more excuses. He is playing in the worst BCS conference out there, and it's not like Minnesota, Stony Brook, and Northwestern are Oklahoma, LSU, and Ohio St! And 2 of those games were at home and Minny is missing a ton of guys! I won't rip Doug for losing to USC or Missouri because BOTH of those schools are out of our league. But the rest of the schedule is nothing too difficult. Beat somebody decent before the extension talk continues. Doug can start with beating Minnesota tomorrow. Then beat Pitt in 2 weeks and then win a couple more vs some awful Big East teams and this issue goes away and you happily give him a big fat extension and lock him up long-term. Until he can prove he can do that (I am not sure he can honestly in my opinion) this extension talk is premature.
