Is Doug an upgrade when it comes to ability to make adjustments during a game, eliminate mental errors, motivate his team? I'm starting to doubt if he is in fact any better.

Marrone is a lot better than GRob. That being said I thought his presser last night was GRobesque.

What I find maddening is you can see that all (OK, most) of the pieces are there. We have been consistently equal or better than our opponents in that stats columns, but seem to come up with a new formula to lose every week. We just can't seem to put it all together. This team is capable of beating every team left on our schedule, but they need to learn how to win, if you know what I mean.

This team is not capable of beating every team on our schedule. Noone wants to admit it, but Pitt, Rutgers, Louisville, SFU and maybe Cincy all have better talent that SU. Once again, if you look at recruiting rankings, SU is last in the Big East. We can say the rankings don't mean anything, but why are we always last in the conference. If you notice the top teams in the recruiting rankings are also ranked in the top 10.

We don't have all of the pieces. We have zero tailbacks with the ability to take it to the house. No longball threat at wide receiver. Our linebackers are safety size. Our front four on defense can't get to the quarterback. Our right side of the offensive line is pitiful. People need to get real. We are not that good. We have ZERO impact players on offense.

Agree with this completely. Good, well coached teams find ways to win. Bad teams with poor coaching find ways to lose. There are 3 phases to a game, offense, defense, and specials. We lose specials every single week. I honestly can not remember the last time our specials gave us anything. Its little things also. Most people, myself included, complain about the lack of punt returns. But look at the punt returner. Someone is in his jock from the second he catches the ball. If not, then there are 3 guys who surround him with no blocker in site. My question is what happens to the return wall? Why do we continually rush swinging gate punt formations? Has anyone ever blocked a punt from this formation (I honestly do not know, I've never seen one)? So, if you can't block a punt why not use those 3 players as blockers. Its not like any of those lineman in the back are going to catch a returner in the open field anyway (see the Northwestern kids return against us). Returns change field position, they change momentum, and if run correctly can score points. No one blocks on these returns and that is 25% talent and 75% effort.

So, going into games we have to win on offense and defense. I do not think we have the talent level to consistently win both of these. The result then is that we lose most of our games, especially against FCS competition. What is most disheartening is our record against the Sun Beast teams. These teams are not world beaters. Minny and NW are not world beaters. In the end, we need to do the little things. No turnovers. No drive killing or sustaining penalties. An extra block, or a block for that matter, on punt returns. These little things add up. They are also the reason we are 1-3.

Good post.

Upgrades have been made, but we still have a long way to go.

So, setting my frustrations from watching the game aside, I do see the big picture.

And you have stated it well.

Stop it. As a Grob coached team, we had very little chance heading into game day. He was utterly inept and ultimately embarrassed himself and our football program. Marrone has improved depth in the program, and creeped things (very slowly) in the right direction.

But games like last night are more maddening then those Grob years. Its almost tougher to lose when you feel your team is on relatively equal footing and have a puncher's chance going into the game.

HCDM is starting to lose me. We have lost 8 consecutive games against FBS squads. As I said going into the year, there really are no more excuses and through 4 games, color me unimpressed.

People need to stop puffing up our recruits every year. We also have to stop with this mindset that we need to lock up NYC kids. We'll get many just because of Marrone. But there are other areas less focused on that have more college ready football players that know how to play the game. People ooh and aah over Adkins and Anselmo's recruiting. Pfft.

Doug isn't GRob. GRob had no S&C program. Our OL was badly out of shape when DM took over. Our program was a complete clusterf*ck when DM took over. With that said, he leaves A LOT to be desired, and his coaching mistakes drive me crazy. DM probably gets 1 more year, but as posted in the chat last nite with a schedule as follows what are the chances he can get to a bowl game next year.
2013 tentative schedule
Ped State @Metlife
@Northwestern
Villanova or Tulane
9 ACC games
FSU, Clemson, Boston College, Maryland, NC State, Wake Forest, Pitt, 2 of Miami, Ga Tech, Va Tech, UVA, and Duke.

Good luck DM.

Well said. SU is exactly where most non-SU fans expected them to be. As excited as people are over Allen and Wilson it needs to be pointed out that they are the 88th and 95th ranked players at their position. So far Marrone's recruits have performed to their projected ratings pretty consistently. I'm thinking the naievete that Marrone could "coach them up" is wearing thin with many.

Not having any of those pieces in year four under Marrone is unacceptable, at what point should we expect to have even half of that list? 2015? 2017?

The pinstripe bowl was won with mainly seniors from Grobs recruits, the best players on the current team are Grob recruits, that being said I have serious doubts whether Grob could have made a pinstripe bowl with his ineptness. I actually do think Grob was a decent recruiter for instance Delone Carter is better than anybody Marrone has brought in. Sales is the most explosive player on the offense.

Marrone liked to think of every possibility on every play it seems, thats fine for the NFL and NFL crowd but college football is a reactionary, emotional game for both the players and the fans, emotion can change games and while I think being prepared is great and thinking about whats going to happen is great, I think more emotion and letting the players be players is also a skill that must be used in the college game. Lets face it even at schools like Alabama and USC with all the five star recruits most players dont make it to the next level and every week in college especially at home is the super bowl ( watch an SEC home team or last nights Florida state game to see what I mean). So Marrone needs to lighten up somewhat and let emotion be a part of the game it can actually carry teams for part of the game.
