Sorry if anyone posted this earlier. I hadn't seen it. But this irked me:

“Honestly, what I think about (is) why do we deserve so much of this bad luck?” Marrone said when asked if Saturday’s gift brought to mind the errant shotgun snap 41 games earlier.

This, to me, is one of the worst things you can say as a coach. Have we been a little bit unlucky over the last four years? Maybe. But we are absolutely no different than any other college football team in the nation. Whether that be injuries, on-field plays, off-field decisions, etc.

Look at last season, and I'd say Wake Forest losing their starting QB that had been absolutely killing us, and the refs of the Toledo game allowing the XP when it clearly was no good are pretty lucky plays. That led to two wins. We still couldn't make a bowl game.

On Saturday, Minnesota missing two makeable FGs, including a 26-yarder, is pretty good luck. Also them having a TD called back on a penalty was pretty unlucky for them as well, if luck is arbitrarily handed out like Marrone thinks it is.

While we're at it - were we unlucky when Hackett decided a sweep with a 250-lb. running back was the best option with 1/2 yard to go for a TD? Or when our head coach/Hackett decides to throw the ball on the 1 yard line to a true freshman WR against Rutgers last year?

You make your own luck. You win or lose games based on all 200-some odd plays per game. Not based on two or three or four that went the wrong way or were "unlucky".

I will continue to root for the team and Marrone to succeed - it is in all of our best interests that he does, and does it fast. But the excuses, even if not perceived as such, need to stop before they start.

That's a victim's mentality and not a good message from a coach.

We have made our own luck, like you said. Beating ourselves over and over again is NOT bad luck, it's bad football. It's poor fundamentals, poor execution and poor preparation. Hopefully, he regrets saying that and gets across the message this week that the team controls its destiny, not some mystical energy in the universe.

Didn't he say we have to earn winning? I don't think blaming things on bad luck reinforces that message.

I thought it was a horrendous first call, especially being scripted. How often does Nassib come out throwing a little harder than he should, which happens it's that kind of sport. But so you throw the fastball to a WR who has had early drops, and the call is to have that football right in his face the moment he turns?

I really didn't think it was bad luck. And I was a little surprised at Marrone's mini-breakdown about it. But that explains the tone of that entire presser. If you thought he looked worn down last year...

You think the first "call" was for Nassib to throw harder than he should..."throw a fastball? First, that was catch-able and if he caught it, no one here would be talking about it negatively. I'm not calling it bad luck, but that pass could have gone multiple ways e.g. catch, drop, intercepted off bounce) and it went the worst of the ways. There were plenty of things that happened that were not "bad luck". e.g. first kickoff return. bonehead. Poor play call on one. Multiple fumbles.

I thought what Marrone said was something like...honestly, the first thought I had was... Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I thought he was just saying what his initial thought was. My first thought after something happens is usually a purely emotional thought. I think he knows that it's more that just luck. It's also true that the ball continues to bounce the other way.

Very disturbing quote indeed. And if that's what you're thinking about, then you have bigger issues.

Rahme is a good reporter who is wrong a lot. He is also ridiculously negative for a reporter covering a college football team. His complaints come across as personal attacks. It's not about you Rahme!

I just went back and listened again. The question to Marrone was along the lines of what did you think about when the first play happened? Marrone eventually said, "Honestly, what I think about is (insert the bad luck statement) followed by "that was the first thing that went through my mind. And that's the truth."

I didn't articulate my point well. My point is that Nassib often comes out energized, and throwing fastballs. So given that tendency, I didn't think that was a good playcall to start the game. But I do agree, that there were other mistakes that were much more preventable.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree that's a valid point. I do think that Marrone will get it from both sides though...criticized if he ran..."too predictable and too conservative" or your criticism. I guess that comes with the territory. Honestly, when I saw the pass and the subsequent interception, I was much more disappointed in the receiver than the qb.
