Hackett was given the opportunity to get the HC job along with Shaffer as both wanted the job.  Gross selected Shaffer, Marrone then selected Hackett as Hackett and Marrone were joined at the hip.  Anyway the Bills already knew all about Hackett and were perfectly fine with the hire as long as Marrone played the strategist for the Bills.

Believe what you will - but he told Shaffer/Gross exactly who he was taking but SU released that info piecemeal as Marrone did his due diligence on each position but right from the get go let it known who he was interviewing/taking.

You seem to forget - Marrone is extremely loyal inside the coaching fraternity to those that made him successful and have the same philosophy as him.  He interviewed multiple people for the Bills OC but waited until Gross selected the HC.  Believe what you will but I know what went down.
