My father got to attend the Mary Kline games over the weekend, and he had a couple of quick impressions about our players that I thought I'd pass along:

Matthew Moyer
  • Very athletic, had several punishing dunks
  • Highly fundamentally sound--its obvious watching this kid that he knows how to play the game the right way
  • More impressively, in a game that had an all-star approach with everyone looking to chuck the ball, Moyer consistently set picks /passed well
  • On that latter point, my dad suggested that Moyer had some fantastic passes--easily 5-6 assists. Kid really sees the floor well and moves the ball
  • Had a big scoring spurt in the second quarter
  • Missed his jump shots, but the form didn't look bad [had one or two rim out that initally looked like they'd drop]
  • Pushes the ball upcourt and handles well
  • Overall assessment: a more athletic Ryan Blackwell type, with that kind of versatility

Moutsapha Diagne
  • Diagne is 6-8, tops
  • Very strong build
  • Ran floor very well
  • Looked very solid offensively, with a very strong back to basket game for a high school big
  • My dad thinks he projects more as a 4 than an ideal 5 in our system -- doesn't have the ideal length we're accustomed to man the pivot defensively
  • HOWEVER, he's probably going to have to play 5 in at least a backup / reserve capacity, barring a dramatic improvement from Obokoh
  • Finished inside very well with either hand
  • Hit several left handed hook shots in the lane, moving from right to left [he's a right handed player]
  • Maybe our most offensively developed big entering the program since Arinze

Michael Porter, Jr.
  • Major league talent--the lofty ratings are deserved
  • Very versatile
  • Takes his man of the dribble consistently
  • Pretty / effective jump shot
  • Would be an absolute coup for SU to land a player of this caliber -- he's exactly the kind of shot in the arm our anemic, offensively challenged squad needs

would you say Rick Jackson esque?

Much more diversified offensive game at this stage of their respective developmental curves. Not knocking Big Rick--but he was all lefty, whereas Diagne is comfortable with both hands. He's quite advanced for a high school prospect in that regard. Sounds like his footwork is good, too [which is very important and often overlooked skill related to low post scoring].

Ryan, it's funny that you pick out Ryan Blackwell as the comparison to Moyer. That's exactly the player who came to mind when I first started diving into his game film/highlights. But obviously more athletic.

Agreed and the other marked difference is that Diange is in great physical shape where as Rick was a bit soft in that department coming in. He improved on that each season and then really slimmed down and got cut before his senior season if you recall. Diange is an ox who is working on getting even stronger an I think he has a bit more lateral quickness than Rick. Rick was however great at anticipating shots and blocking them, often times before the offensive player was even able to get off the ground.

I agree with your dad's assessments; many of the same observations were in my write-up of the event. IE: Moyer's handle and unselfishness. It was very obvious that Moyer's an outstanding passer. I wouldn't call it a surprise but his highlights never really focused on that too much.

Also, a big impression is that Diagne is very good with his left hand. I actually think he looks more comfortable going left and using his left on hook shots. I do think he's a legit 6'8", and he does look like a natural 4. I do disagree with your dad about Diagne's length--he has a tremendous wingspan, and coupled with his strength, will be able to hold down the 5 quite fine.

Nice points, jordoo.

(p.s. - is your continued use of "Diange" instead of Diagne on purpose at this point? ;):D)

"DIANGE! oops I mean DANG!" I never noticed that and I've read his name a million times by now. I'm sure some of it is my mild dyslexia but most of it is I just cannot fathom how one would even pronounce Diagne. Thank you for the correction.

Moustapha, I'm extremely sorry for misspelling your last name and also being unable to pronounce it. Please accept my humble apology.

just pokin' fun! I kind of get the feeling you SHOULD keep spelling it that way - that it is somehow good mojo we shouldn't mess with!!

No worries.

Nah! Diagne is a bad dude he doesn't need any mojo. He'll just suck the opponents mojo right out of them if he feels he is lacking.

I'm not sure if you recall or which boards you have frequented over the years but at one time I was infamous (at least to an extent) for my horrible spelling and grammar. Spell check being standard on pretty much every device, and helping my daughter with creative writing has made it APPEAR that I can spell however "Diange" registers the same as "Diagne" with the spell checks and my dyslexic brain. TEE will get a kick out of this when he reads it, a new jordoo classic spelling misstep for him to add to his list. Plus he will note I still can't figure out how to tag people properly in posts. :p

The Blackwell comparison was what I was thinking as well. But I think Moyer has a bigger upside.

BTW, Blackwell is at least 50 pounds heavier now than he was in college.

That's OK. SU will misspell Diagne's name anyway when they retire his jersey!

So you're saying that with this pose, and the length of Tapha's arms...he's almost certainly grabbing LeBron's arse in that photo?
Reach around that's been shopped.

Did you win the contest to name "American Pharoah (sic)"? :)

Something was posted on the recruiting board the other day about Moustapha's qualifying academically - is that anything to be concerned with?

I have no idea. I think we would've heard something if there were an issue. The post had a question mark after it; I think people tend to anticipate a transcript issue with a player born in a foreign country...

yep, let's hope it's nothing at all

I'm not convinced Diagne's even 6'8". Draft express lists his measurements at the Lebron James camp as 6'8" in shoes, which would likely make him 6'7", the same height he's listed at at the other camps he's been measured at.. His wingspan will help him, though, if he has to play the 5.
