Spot on. Syracuse has usually had spectacular goalie play in its NC runs. Looking at Q1 in detail, McCool was inconsistent. At times great, but at others not. He succumbed to the MD barrage. The blame is all over the field, from our O missing good looks, to our d mids not getting stick to glove, to lost face offs & turnovers, but McCool succumbed to the MD barrage. At 12:45 of the 1st, McCool makes an incredible 1 on 1 save. At 10:48, he saves another, an open bouncer at his feet. At 9:42, another. 3 great saves in the first 5 mins, or 25% of his saves with about 90% of the game remaining. At 7:30, there is a repeat of the 12:45 shot, but McCool guesses wrong and it goes right between his feet while he's still upright. At 5:10, another incredible in close save after a chaotic scramble for the ball that MD wins. At 3:47 spanos gets a super clean & close look but shoots wide. However, you can see McCool is starting to glitch, he's a step late in reading & reacting. Those close misses can be really hard on a goalie though bc of how you contort your body to reach the ball. At 3:24 Stovall buries it clean, high & hard, from deep, over McCools right shoulder. No screen, no change of levels. This is the type of shot a great goalie must save. McCool doesn't even step to the ball. Knowing what's about to happen, he's lost in the moment. At 2:49, the pole Larkin buries it high and hard from distance over McCools stick. McCool guesses waist & lowers his stick, the ball goes right where his stick was. This is 100% on McCool. He's guessing & strangely already she'll shocked. Need to save this. At 1:33, he makes a good save at his left hip. And an easy one w 6 seconds left and the shot clock running down. 6 saves, 15 minutes in, or 50% of his saves with 75% of the game remaining. So, in the 1st qtr, McCool played well, but still gave up 2 that he should've saved, or at least read better. Inconsistent. Q2 14:05, gets his stick on a low heater. Great save. 13:53, another great save, low off an in close question mark. 12:32, clean & hard shot from distance, low & to his weak side. Most difficult shot to save. He reads it, but reacts too late. 1-4 MD. 7:39, high and hard from distance, again right over his stick. Gotta save those. Our Dmids though are letting MD shoot clean. At 7:10, mD gets their 6th, off a pipe & rebound to an inclose shot. Impossible to save. But, you do want your goalie to try to control those rebounds, via clean saves or getting a stick on the rebound. McCool oddly runs left as the ball bounces right. He's just not tracking the ball properly. At 4:58, one of the worst, low angle shot over his near shoulder, I.e. he lets in the lowest angle shot, when you want to completely close that off and force the shot wide. While not good, our D is just sucking at this point. 3:56, another clean, long & hard shot that goes right over McCools stick. 1-8. I will stop here bc less than halfway through and the game is over. McCool made some great saves, especially early, but saved less than 20% of the shots you need to above 50% on. MD must have known that he flinches or freezes on the hard shots right to his box. Plenty of blame to go around & it is more elsewhere, but our goalie has to be better if we want to win.
