While college hoops worked its way down to four teams over the weekend, college lacrosse took advantage of its own exposure on national television. Notre Dame outlasted No. 1 Syracuse in double-overtime on Saturday and then North Carolina held on for dear life against Duke in instant classics that had lax rats buzzing on social media. WrestleMania was trending by Sunday night, too, but the Big Show winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal has nothing on ACC men's lacrosse.
Notre Dame picked up its most significant regular-season win in program history and all the Irish have to do is turn around and play their nemesis Duke. North Carolina gets a huge win over the Blue Devils and now has to face No. 5 Virginia while Syracuse goes out of conference to deal with Magical Mystery Tour of Lyle Thompson and Albany. The Great Danes bring a Top 10 ranking with them into the Carrier Dome on Thursday night.
Yes, it's a gauntlet for all but they will be rewarded on Selection Sunday. Not only does the ACC play Rock 'em Sock 'em robot games in conference, all five teams go outside the league and play heavyweights, and all five are better off for it. Virginia's win over Cornell earlier this year improves Duke's resume, Carolina's win over Denver helps Notre Dame, and Syracuse's win over Army helps ... You get the point.
It may seem obvious but Denver and Maryland will receive not nearly as much help from their league brethren and any slip up could be costly for the Pioneers and Terps in the seeding. It's still March and I am wrapped up about seedings. It's going to be a fun April...
