McCord

All that is true. And I have little doubt that he has the utmost confidence in his capabilities, and his ability to achieve his goal of playing in the NFL.

I do however think that it isn't an either-or / black and white decision -- not anymore, with NIL. If he wasn't able to earn money now, then it would kind of be a no-brainer. Go get paid, very little to prove, tough to top leading the nation in passing yardage / completions.

But on the other hand, if the skuttlebutt he's getting from the NFL indicates that he's in the round 6 / 7 or UFA, then he has a lot to gain by coming back.

First, he can earn a 7-figure NIL amount. Second, he gets to be the man for another season. And he gets to actually flip that narrative, come into the season with a lot of hype, and play his way into the top 3 rounds -- or even better. Think: Joe Burrow, who was rated as a 6th round pick after his junior season.

The money of being a higher draft pick might make waiting an attractive alternative, given that he's compensated now.

Of course, all that gets thrown out the window if he projects as a top 4 round draft pick. If that's the case, I think he should go.

Otherwise, I think he should probably return and roll the dice on his capabilities yet again, using our high profile schedule next season to catapult himself to the top of the draft boards.
It’s equally likely he won’t perform as well against a much tougher schedule, in which case his position won’t improve and could drop.

"Slipperyness" to avoid sacks and being able to take off running for a first down, when necessary. He's decent at it, but below average for NFL standards.
He did much better vs pressure, but he needs to keep working on operating under pressure.

The one thing we learned last year is that the NFL is not like the NBA inso far far as you have to go when you are young. Guys like Nix and Penix are considerably older than McCord, and they went back to college, improved and rose right up the draft board.

Initially, my thought was that Kyle should go to the NFL while the iron was hot but now I think it is a very tough decision.
It's a tough decision since the NFL iron is warm rather than hot

Which is around 200K post-tax and agent fees. He'll be making that annually plus a bonus by the time he is in his early 30s doing B2B biz dev work for some firm with Cuse ties after our magical run next year.

COME BACK AND BE A LEGEND KYLE
About $300k net.

If it was such a slam dunk easy decision why ask, why appeal? Why not the definitive thanks but no thanks. He’s the guy closest to the facts, how come he doesn’t see it like you do?
Did you reply to the wrong post? He didn’t say anything about an easy decision.

I think it comes down to playing. If he can play in the NFL next season, he should leave. If he is going to sit on the bench in the NFL next season, he should come back to Cuse. If his top motivation is being a starting QB next season, Cuse may be the safest option to guarantee that happening. It’s a tough decision where both options have its pros and cons. If he does come back and doesn’t perform to the level he did this year or has an unforeseen injury. He should be revered in Cuse whether it’s us next season or the NFL for years to come.

If he cant get into the first 2 days NIL will be much more money in a guaranteed way.

Money in hand vs your dream
I do think when it’s the NFL dream, it’s imagining playing in the NFL and not just being on a roster. When you see your teammates at Ohio State not just make, but play in the NFL. The NFL dream means something different than what we have seen at Syracuse since the 1990s.

If I was his father, agent, or family member and it was pretty certain he was going to get drafted I would tell him to go to the NFL. The risk isn't worth the reward. Outside of the big NIL number we are offering, it is all risk. He could play worse. He could get injured. Outside of money and Syracuse fame, there isn't much for him to gain It will be very hard to have a better season than he just had and his perceived weaknesses will not change.

As a Syracuse fan don't listen to what I wrote above come back 100000%

I think if he stays, he becomes a Syracuse legend. If he goes, he might just be another late round qb flyer pick for a bad team. Stay and get paid more. Stay and build relationships with teammates, coaches, fans, the university and the community. Stay and be #2 behind Fran. Stay and captain your team. Stay and compete for the Heisman. Stay and win a national championship.

Playing as a rookie qb means you’re (more lilely) in a dumpster fire org. Better to get drafted behind a veteran incumbent and challenge him to the point where the team doesn’t overpay for them next time their contract is up.

Good call. McCord really is only 22 and has only actually played 2 real seasons of college football. Yes he's a winner and a dude and I think he's better than most on the draft board this year and next but still.

We need to take the Orange colored glasses off. Did anyone even pay attention to Kyle until we beat Miami? Probably not. Did we face a top 50 defense all year? I'm not sure but I don't think so.

It's not meant to be a knock on what we accomplished. We played some real solid teams. were they playoff teams, were they SEC and B1G teams with NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball though not really.

This is a good summary.

There are things he can do to improve
Thorough analysis of his strengths and weaknesses here, projecting him as the 5th QB taken in the 4th round. This site has him behind Ward, Sanders, Milroe and Ewers - probably about his ceiling. Since he could also slip behind Beck and Howard, 4th round seems like a best case scenario. And fourth round money is not life-changing. at least compared to NIL. Compensation gets worse if he slips to rounds 5-7. I get that the lure of the NFL is powerful, but it is hardly a slam dunk for Kyle this cycle. "Seasoning" another year won't hurt him (e.g., Nix and Penix). Risk of injury is a dice roll either way. His stock could go down if he has a bad year, but he could also languish on the bench as QB 2 or 3 somewhere.

Agree, this is where I think his head is at...

Yeah and Kyle isn’t playing anywhere in the NFL next year unless there are injuries in front of him, a projected 4th round ish pick isn’t handed the keys otherwise. It’s a very tough decision for him, lots of positives on each side

Well said. Has anyone looked at the experience angle for next year as well? Everyone says oh this is a weak QB draft and next year will be better.

I haven't looked closely at those 2026 QB draft projections. Seems like alot of that is just vibes. Sellers and Manning are going to be great QB's but they're also 19 years old right now.

Regarding how many top 50 defenses Kyle faced, here is your answer:

1) Ohio (10th)
2) Miami (27th)
3) Cal (36th)
4) Georgia Tech (42nd)
5) UConn (46th)
6) UNLV (49th)

BC was 55th and VT 57th.

It wasn't a gauntlet but it wasn't a stack of tomato cans either.

I think Kyle is a 3rd round type of guy, but I’m not confident he will be drafted there. I think he will likely land more in the 5-6 range.

Thats the hard part, he may hear from NFL guys that he has 3rd round potential if he shows out during the process. Thats doesn’t mean he will be drafted there, unfortunately.

The one guarantee in all of this is he could make a few million dollars here. If he comes back and something negative happens, he will still get a chance to be drafted. He’s going to throw well in workouts this year or next.

The NFL is every players dream. I believe the guaranteed 2 million or whatever people are saying we are willing to pay is the safer play here.
