McCord

Was it Day's job to do what is best for Kyle or what is best for Ohio State? What if you needed Kyle vs Michigan, or the B1G CG, or the CFB Playoffs? Isn't it better to have him play vs Michigan State in that case?

UGA is in the same situation right now. You need to prep your team for that season. Especially if you can recruit over a kid.
As I said, the sport is in a metastable state. Day's interests and McCord's were at odds in this scenario.

I’d struggle to find a more egregious example of burning a redshirt than Fran having Malachi James stand on the goal line to watch kicks sail over his head. Fran mentioned that a freshman told him that he wanted to redshirt and he refused the request. Much speculation centered on James. Can we defend that while criticizing Day for getting some late season snaps for his QB2?

Assuming Kyle would have preferred not to play. And if that is the case, the interests of the team have to come first, don’t they?

Everyone here wants Kyle to get the extra year (me too, obviously), but some of the things that are being said are just nuts. "Day should have put in his 3rd string QB over his 2nd string QB (McCord) in the blowout to preserve his eligibility." In what world would that ever happen on any team? You put the 2nd stringer in to get him reps. Too many folks trying to justify why Kyle should get the extra year. Again, I hope he does and it seems more likely than it did a few weeks ago, from what I read here.

The only difference is that James wasn’t inserted in game 12 to receive one kick and that was his 5th game. That’s basically what happened to McCord. But I get what you’re saying.

Absolutely not. The genie is out of the bottle. Players now have a cash compensation opportunity - through NIL only - which is unfortunately serving as a proxy for wages. Asking a player with high earning potential to burn a redshirt needs to be viewed as asking someone to work unpaid for a year.

If we had a 4 or 5 star freshman QB here that was QB2 and we lost a year of his eligibility over garbage snaps late in the season, there would be an uproar. Don’t even try to say there wouldn’t be. Circumstances do matter.

The only reason why this is being justified is because he was at a factory school that has a lazy Susan of 4-5 star QB’s year in, year out.

Yeah, that had Ewers sitting on the bench having played only 1 game.

I'm not disagreeing there wouldn't be an uproar. That said, the backup gets the reps. Should the starter go down, the backup is in. And at these factory schools, the qb's are typically not 5 year kids, heck most aren't seen as 4 years. Arch Manning will be a Jr next year, and likely be the starting QB for 1 season and then head to the NFL. That is how most programs look at it. I'm going to put my best guys out there, and in cases such as these, they assume those guys wouldn't be around for that 5th year anyway.

Every HC should burn a player’s redshirt as there is no guarantee that the kid will be there as a Soph let alone a 5th year SR. Why should a HC help out the kid’s future team at the detriment of his own team?

But you don’t have to manage it that way. Especially when you have Ewers there too. But hopefully they just go 5 to play 5 and that will address a lot of this.

Any event we’re probably all arguing in circles here about something that isn’t happening anyway lol.

There’s no way the NCAA or courts are opening that Pandora’s box. The coach is hired to do what they think is best for the program, not to make decisions based on whether or not a player might be worth a bunch of NIL money if he got a 5th year.

I hope I’m wrong but I think a lot of people are grasping at straws and trying to invent legal theories. It’s understandable because of how much of an impact McCord would have if he comes back, but I just don’t see it happening.

It did happen to Hart though.

FYI, if the waiver appeal is denied, there will not be an announcement. Kyle will just go on his merry way.
I hope that Kyle isn't letting the waiver situation distract him from his bowl preparations. We need to have his head in the game, and not allow this to become another Pitt nightmare.

He was RB3 after Nixon went out and brought in when guys were banged up. I don’t think you can fault that.

James was our KR1 and probably would have been that all season.

You’d have to find a case where a guy was inserted late in the season that burned a shirt when it really wasn’t critical. We can argue back and forth as to whether McCord going in was necessary but I think we can all agree it wasn’t critical.

In that case, the player is more than capable to tell the coach after playing the 4th game, they no longer wish to compete for that year. And they’ll subsequently sit out because they are concerned with a future possible payout. Playing your best players isn’t a bad coaching move. There’s a reason he makes the salary he has, and coaches where he does. I disagree completely with anyone stating otherwise.

Although everyone can agree it was a waste of a year, it’s still a topic that could have and I’m sure was talked about prior to the season. You don’t practice not to play. Anyone who’s ever played any sport knows this.
You come here, having been hurt the entire time, eighth game of the year,” Brown said. “He came and told me, ‘Coach, I think I want to redshirt.’ I said, ‘Redshirt my butt. You’re not redshirting. You’re about to play this week. You’re going to take off. You’re a part of what we’re doing. Just trust and believe in it.’

Everyone here would love to see that happen. I just don’t agree with the cry baby complaints and demanding for their way because they think it’s “fair” and “what’s right”. Life is not fair, man up. That’s what the adults should be instilling into these kids heads.

I hope we get that one in a million shot at having Kyle back, and I hope he makes this the best season in orange history.

'I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams.
I hope..
Ok, I get it now......this is Rob Konrad. The one world view (yours) is always the correct one. That was the giveaway.

This was regarding JRS, correct?

That type of scenario may very well have happened with McCord at OSU. Jack Miller was a sophomore reserve QB when McCord was a freshman. Miller was arrested for a DUI type offense, was suspended, then reinstated all between McCord’s 4th and 5th game. Both McCord and Miller played in their 4th game in the exact same game before Miller’s suspension (Miller’s last actual game at OSU). Miller then announced he was portaling after having played 4 games all before McCord’s 5th game. (Miller ended up at Florida the next year before quitting college football). Stroud, their starting QB then played every snap their last 7 games despite 2 games(Purdue and Mich St) being blowouts. Just seems strange but who knows.
