McCord

Another optimism post. Fran Brown and team are out in Cali this week trying to stay focused. Team is already reading all the headlines about Washington's mass exodus and being 16 point favorites.

McCord coming back is just another big distraction.

We all know that the first thing that will get asked in the post presser to Fran is about Kyle. I think there is a pregame presser too. Kyle probably is going to get asked in a sideline interview after the game or at least in his postgame presser too.

Makes sense to me that Fran and Kyle would want to announce after the Bowl having that 10th win and why not on FOX in primetime. Both these guys like a headline and building some hype.

Fran's already nailed it by saying McCord is our starting QB for as long as he's eligible. Just hammer that message, and Kyle's should be similar. He can tweak it with some deference to the NCAA and say something like "I love playing college football and we've made a fair case for why I should have one more year to play quarterback at Syracuse, but it's in other people's hands to decide now and we're hoping for the best and look forward to their decision."

That's fair and the 5 / 5 is the future. I'm just talking simple #'s of players that fall into each bucket. We're talking thousands and thousands for Juco, that they just said we don't agree but we won't stop you.

If you tell me there are a thousand players out there that had a red shirt burned accidentally by a 5th or even 6th game I call BS. There's not many players in this category.
Well, actually they didn’t have a lot of leeway. A court ruled that, in one case, JUCO time couldn’t count. That established a legal precedent that made it highly likely that any other guys who appealed would win. Rather than fight dozens of probable losing battlrs, they made a one year blanket exception while they appeal the decision. NONE of the above relates, in any way, to McCord.

Here’s a convo between myself and a NATIONAL RECRUITING ANALYST familiar with the NCAA

QUESTION
I was wondering if you’d share your thoughts on the whole Kyle McCord situation. Now that it’s public knowledge that he’s going after a 5th year of eligibility. From all I gather it seems like both he and the university are challenging the ncaa based on the anticipation of the 5in5 rule being implemented and the ruling of the juco players getting the extra year this year. In my opinion it seems like if the ncaa waits to long and costs seniors the extra year of eligibility it will open a massive class action lawsuit that the NCAA does not want. It would benefit them to grant everyone a 5th year now and move to a permanent rule over the summer. What are your thoughts and how likely do you think it is that Kyle gets another year?

ANSWER
Great question! I agree the NCAA could do that to avoid litigation. My guess is they do it sooner rather than later so CFB programs have a chance to figure out their Transfer Portal needs, i.e. like Syracuse with Kyle McCord. That concept makes logical sense anyway.

Take it for what you will- but optimism is running high here! I would not be surprised if there is some announcement immediately following the bowl game since the first transfer window closes the next day!

I fully see your approach, but you have to look at it from both the NCAA perspective and the players that will be impacted. In this scenario there are players who did NOT get the Covid year and are missing out on the 5/5. It’s ONLY one class that is affected by this. By not blanketing them- the NCAA will open a door to a massive class action lawsuit. They absolutely do not want that. If you have one player push it- they have no choice to buckle.

Can’t wait until we get to a point where we’re flat out making trades mid season.

FSU’s season tanks, and they start dumping payroll to buyers like Indiana and Syracuse this year.
I envision it more like the soccer system where they "sell" players.

There goes the academic progress metric!

Is the take it for what you will part of the answer? Or your final touches?

Just like the Ty Detmer votes hurt Don McPherson and opened the door for Tim Brown. Gosh, even saying his name still hurts. SU got jobbed twice that season, by Pat Dye and the Heisman voters.
We went to visit my Aunt & Uncle in Louisiana that year in hopes we could find some tickets to the Sugar Bowl. Ended up watching it in the French Quarter (I was only 13 so couldn’t fully enjoy New Orleans the ) but I’ve hated Auburn and Pat (Tie) Dye ever since.

Ehh no thanks. What is more likely to happen is FSU loses its LT mid-season and throws money at a smaller school with a good LT to take there’s away mid season. The school would profit but the fan base would not.

That is what I am hoping as I will be there...and would love to witness it.

All I know is the University better be aggressive in threatening legal action Now and not After

With the University's lawyers on speed dial.

Well we’re here on standbye too. I’m sure there’s a lot of lawyers or at least we can research the law.

This. That Pavia decision is garbage. He won because of where he filed. If courts ultimately affirm this rationale (NIL based), it essentially renders any regulations the NCAA creates arbitrary and meaningless.

They should have filed briefs in State Supreme Court citing the NCAA granting JC years as extra years of playing time beyond a normal 4 years. They have by that ruling already given all JC players a minimum of 5 years.
So they have to grant Kyle and others a 5th year or they lose in court for giving 5 to JC players.
