He didn’t get paid to play football at Syracuse. That’s not allowed.

NCAA isn't allowed to enforce the rule on recruiting incentives and has said they won't until the case is settled (although since they already have a restraining order seems likely to me they'll lose).

Pay for play wasn't banned which makes it kind of murky. Maybe you can't say all the folks with NIL deals are 'Pro Football Players' but I think it's fair to say many of them are Pro at 'Football Related Activities'.

People talk a lot about McCord's season as the starting QB at OSU, and they always mention that he lost just one game, The Game. But after the loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Buckeye's played in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri. The conversation on ESPN leading up to that Cotton Bowl game against Missouri was focused mainly on Missouri's high powered SEC offense and how OSU had not defended against anything like it playing in the B1G. McCord having left the OSU program via the transfer portal was mentioned of course, but it was not the main storyline going into that bowl game, and I wondered at the time if that had anything to do with McCord choosing Syracuse as his destination with a new and first-time head coach rather than transferring to a school with more recent success.

Missouri went on to beat OSU 14-3 in the Cotton Bowl last year. As it turned out the story was how much the OSU offense struggled in that game without McCord and how well the Buckeye defense played nonetheless. The OSU offense had just 203 total yards of offense, managed just 12 first downs, and lost one fumble along the way, and yet the Buckeye's defense managed to hold that high powered SEC offense to just 331 yards of total offense and 14 points. OSU's starting QB in that game was Devin Brown, the 2nd string QB all season behind McCord. Brown started slowly, and just when he seemed to be settling down he sprained his ankle and left the game never to return. At that point the Buckeye's had 3 points, and the score at halftime ended up being OSU up on Missouri 3-0. After the third string QB for the Buckeye's entered the game OSU was never able to move the ball and scored no more points, and Missouri eventually scored two TDs later in the second half to win the game 14-3.

After the Cotton Bowl OSU removed Brian Hartline as the Buckeye's Offensive Coordinator. They hired Bill O'Brien as the new OC, but then O'Brien was offered and accepted the position at Boston College as the head coach. The Buckeyes then hired Chip Kelly to be the OC this season.

Cut to The Game this season. OSU (10-1) had home field advantage, they had pretty much the same defense, if not improved, a new QB in Will Howard, and a new OC in Chip Kelly. And, Michigan (6-5) went into the Shoe and beat the Buckeyes yet again.

The Buckeye's didn't just get a new QB in Will Howard, they changed OCs and ended up with Chip Kelly, and the results in The Game were the same, but this time the Buckeyes lost to a Michigan team that was (6-5) at home.

McCord is a winner. He is a leader. He goes about his business the right way.

I saw some debate from some OSU fans on one of their boards from earlier in the season discussing McCord's performance after one of our wins and a number of them basically said that he was performing much better at Cuse and doing things everyone wanted him to do at OSU but that he didn't do (better reads/progressions and stepping up in the pocket more often and getting the ball out faster, etc.)

People blamed their QB coach (Dennis) for not developing Kyle properly for their offense and Dennis was replaced when they brought Chip Kelly in as OC/QB coach after McCord left (so maybe something to that.)

Takeaway: He was a better fit for our offense and probably position-coached better for it here.

The one thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned is that Kyle said a couple of months ago on Cuse Sports Talk that he's not eager to take classes again if he does come back.

I'm paraphrasing but he said something along those lines. Graduate classes would be tough.

Graduate classes are hella easy. Dude could easily skate.

My grad school classes and grades were definitely easier/better than undergrad although this may be related to sobriety.

Realistically it’s not likely that another year will improve his stock. The NFL scouts have already seen all they need. They know his strengths and weaknesses. If he returns, given a tougher schedule and no Gadsden, Meeks or possibly Allen, it will be very hard for him to match, let alone exceed, this year’s performance. And there’s always the chance of injury. To top it off, this year’s qb class is considered to be weak. Next year’s will almost certainly be more talented, so even if he has another great year he may not actually improve his draft level.

Not accurate at all. QB’s are much different than almost any other draft able position. The NFL likes to see QB’s have as much game experience as possible. Where you start out on the draft boards at the start of the season also plays a big role in your “narrative” (the player, not you). Very rarely do NFL teams draft QB’s high in the draft that don’t have a lot of games under their belt.

Now for whatever reason McCord is a little different b/c he does have experience and wasn’t getting the preseason hype he could/should have gotten. Regardless though, if he came back he’d already be touted as early draft pick material and then it’d be up to him to hold that status through the season.

I do think he has a chance to improve his position a lot, potentially going through the draft process.

I know everyone realizes this. A lot of people I know their grad degree was really easy but for my Masters, it was an insane amount of work/time.

Well keep in mind, Kcsu pegged Braden Davis to be our starting QB after Shrader left when he committed here. So probably even below “below the Mendoza line”.

So this may actually work heavily in our favor!
Did I?

Yeah law school for me was a walk in the park (sigh). Much harder than Newhouse which was a trade school.

My advice to any of these guys is to lean into the idea of learning and taking advantage of free education. It’s not a burden it’s a gift to get access to smart people away from football.

Of course I’m not a football player but at some point Kyle will be starting a post football journey

With OSU McCord seemed tentative and worried about making a mistake but at SU he was confident and knew Fran was behind him even after the Pitt debacle. This, to me, is why it may depend on what team he goes to. That said, hopefully he learned from both experiences and flourishes at the next level.

I'm sure the NFL will ask him about this as well, I know would if I were a GM.
