My buddy Jessie (Met him in Alaska, he was wearing a Cuse hat, found out he is from Auburn, went to Keuka, and knew a bunch of my hometown friends. Posts on the board as 'Section314) will be in the Syracuse area, and is taking his 6 year old son on his first official visit to SU. He would like to show him the Melo Center. Is it cool to just pop in and walk around?

The doors are usually unlocked during the day. You'll be able to see the bball team tributes in the main atrium along with some displays for lacrosse and other olympic sports. And if it's unused, you should be able to walk into the Manley turf field area.

However, the bball practice court is under lock n key. You won't get access without permission.

I haven't tried to walk into the new football practice facility, but would imagine its under lock n key as well...

Manley is open during normal business hours (people work there). Just enter the main entrance, as 44Pride said, and you can walk through the football and lacrosse exhibits,,, and into the "museum" part of the Melo Center. If you want to go onto the "old" indoor practice field, go into the Orange Club office (very close to the entrance) and ask one of the folks there if you can see it. If they are not too busy with their work, they are usually very accommodating. Jason Poles, one of the guys in the Orange Club office, has actually posted here, so he knows about syracusefan.com.

I was cleaning out my wallet this morning looking for my university drivers license, and came across Jason's card that he gave me when you introduced me. Really awesome guy. Still have the pin that he gave me as well. I'll have to remember to bring that to the Bahamas with me.

One thing you can also do, not sure because it's the off season for basketball, but if you go to the office and request a poster they'll usually give you a couple. I did that a few years back and they were very very kind and accommodating.

You might want to keep in mind that Fan Fest for football is August 15. Football IPF is suppose to be available for a look during that event, and I am pretty sure the Melo center will be open too, at least it was last year.

Wow - an official visit? What position does he play? ;)

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. After lunch at Faegan's, shopping for some fresh Cuse gear on Marshall, and visiting the Ernie Davis statue, we made our way up to Manley. It was worth the trip, as we were able to see the football and lacrosse displays. We didn't bother asking for any special "tours," as my son was pretty wiped out from all the walking. It was also pretty cool to show him Coyne Field where I scored my first 2 varsity goals against Skaneateles in 1995 (okay that was more for me). I think we saw Franklin Howard on Campus, but I'm not sure if he is even on campus yet. Great experience...thanks again everyone!

In the meantime, start thinking about ... http://802lacrosse.com/

You'll probably need to move all the way up to Middlebury to make it worth your while, but they are already having success getting kids noticed.

I'm actually about 20 minutes south of Middlebury. I was shocked at the quality of lacrosse in Vermont. Here in my town youth lacrosse programs start at age 3, and the kids begin organize play in pads at age 7. I coach HS lacrosse here, and we played a prep school in Burlington, Rice Academy. Wow...they stomped us pretty good. Classy coach though...he definitely pulled all his starters after the first quarter. Scary thing is they didn't even win the state championship.

Glad it worked out for ya, brotha!

For a small state, it's not bad at all. We have some talent around here. My son hopefully will play for South Burlington (Class of 2021) when he gets to HS. They challenged for Class I this year but lost to the eventual champ CVU (who has a huge population advantage over our small school). One of the kids on CVU is our realtor's kid and he has committed, along with a friend on the SB team, to UVM. A couple of my son's coaches for 802 are either at UVM, heading there, or one is actually heading to Albany to play. Not bad for a state with only 600,000 people overall.

If you ever want to participate in the 802 club as a coach, I'd be glad to introduce you to the head coach (not a bad guy even if he did play at Georgetown) and the guys who actually started it. I'm friendly with all of them. The guy coaching the 2020 class is the South Burlington HC so it's not uncommon.

Thank you again for sharing that link. I had no idea there was even club lacrosse in Vermont. I may have to look into coaching opportunities there in the future. I'm going to have my hands full this year. Taking over for the HC of my team who is moving to Texas. My team is full of athletes, but are lacking in stick skills and lacrosse fundamentals. Hell, 95% of my kids didn't even pick up a stick until their freshman year. Great bunch of kids though and I love it.

It's nice to hear that Vermont is going to 3 divisions next season. We will have a more competitive schedule, and play fewer of the teams that will kick our teeth in. Playing Burr & Burton Academy, Rice Academy, Brattleboro, Woodstock and Rutland was tough on my kids.
