Miami Heat's zone defense

With a versatile center, can we do something like this?

With an NBA 3pt line and a 24 second clock? Absolutely. Both of which I feel are overdue. Bring the college rules more in line with the NBA to better prepare kids that have a shot at the league

Also helps to have nba level talent.

So, no, Syracuse can’t do something like that right now

Proficiency wise sure. That said to be fair...a shorter 3pt line and longer shot clock would make it quite a bit harder to run at the NBA level too.

50 years of Zone - more than enough for me. We need to move on. If somebody else, somewhere else can execute an efficient Zone D - kudos to them, but I am sick and tired of the Zone and want no part of it other than for a couple of odd possessions here and there to mix things up.

Of course, it wasn’t 50 years. JB used to play man, with 2-3 on In Bounds under the basket. 1996 was the tipping point.

Remember, guys, zone defense can’t defend 3’s. When 3 point shooting teams play against m2m they miss 100% of their 3’s 100% of the time.

The passive aggressive zone act is back I see... what a joy.

Newsflash- no one ever said this on this board about zone in general.

Carry on.

I feel like we have the personnel next year to use both aggressive man and aggressive zone configurations. Plus the coaches with the experience to teach both. Red would be smart to employ this two headed monster on occasion. It could make us really unique.

As long as he keeps the roles simple 100 pct agree. Press back into the zone so you don't have to defend in it for as long. Has to be much more of a matchup zone vs using rotations though - on ball defender that sags, rim protector sags as well and the wings shade towards the shooters.

Ok, so do you need another 23 years of zone to be ready to move on ???

and, yes, i even remember some man in the 2003 run.
What do you take that from my post? The OP to which I replied was woefully inaccurate.
If you wish, you can check my history on this topic. I have been ready to move on for quite some time. I also wanted to get rid of all of our 2-3 coaches.

We don’t go on any run in 2003 without it. Everyone remembers Oklahoma, but there would be no regional final vs Oklahoma without ditching the zone vs Ok St. …and we aren’t in Albany as a 3 seed if we didn’t use man in 2 of our biggest regular season wins.

Yes, that is why I have been mystified for 20 years that Jimmy totally dropped M2M when it enabled his finest hour. Makes no sense to me.

I'd love to see 'Cuse implement a full-court trapping defense. Run & Gun, baby!

This^^^
The issue for me was never "zone vs m2m", but rather "zone, no-matter-what"!
When you become inflexible, you become ineffective. JB didn't seem to mind dying on the "2-3 zone hill" on a regular basis. In the end it became intolerable.

Kind of like Carnasecca with the 'Bush.

Heard on the mismatch podcast that Miami has run more zone than any team in 19 years (or something like that).

It’s a copycat league they said and expect to see other teams try to emulate it more.

Now, as the article said, it needs the personnel.

With all of that, I have to imagine JB might get some calls based on what Miami’s success from NBA teams.

Again, I give you maliq Brown's highlight tape. I think he could make an interesting option at center: not large but versatile and very active, especially on defense.
