I have been very negative on this guy and I do think he's pretty smug and annoying -  but lots of writers are those things.  I've come to the conclusion that Cohen is being used by his employers. You don't get to the NY times with unsubstantiated provocation pieces.  You end up on the waste heap of sports blogosphere.  I mean maybe it's his goal to be a blogger, but I don't think so - I think he wants to be Pete Thamel.  Hopefully he realizes before it's too late that his employer is using him in a way that is detrimental to his professional future.  Some of the more recent work tells me that either he realizes this or his employer realizes that they need to tone it down - not sure which.
