Michael Gbinije Interview...

I'm really excited about Gbinije, doesn't seem like he's getting too much love around here after the Canadian exhibitions but I really don't think we've seen what he's capable of. I'm not saying he's going to have a Wes Johnson type impact but the guy can obviously ball.

Yeah I don't remember seeing much of a Gbinije thread or a compare him to anybody thread/ guess his contributions post after canada. If I had a long sum up on Gbinije after first sight just for excitment though...

My feeling on Gbinije is a 6'7 long guard who plays face up (not just zone) D. he can handle the ball, with his head up well while both passing and pushing tempo. He Can get in the lane, and get to the rim, but saved it for the carlton game when we were in need of it. Not sure he understands you got to play with that dire need all game yet. He played big driving and attacking the lane with and without the ball while we can roaring back though. Gbinje,Ennis, and Grant all stepped up and led(key word) the offense to get high percentage shots during that stretch. They did it off driving, not just the entry passing, which is good news for our backcourt and a typical cuse offense. Maybe we wore Carlton down some with all our depth, or they tired themselves out from all the pressing. Needless to say we simply outbasketballed, not just outathleticized a well oiled Carlton team during that stretch.

Gbinije moved well with a high IQ without the ball. But, he got caught in a deadzone in the corner, where he hesitated, took a few steps in, and shot a flat jumper. He has the iq to run to open space, but not sure he has the cordination/jumper concentration that BJ, Ron, Cooney showed from the corner. He may have been worried about drawing a charge while attacking the lane. At 6'7 I would have liked to see him take a few more steps in, and use a slowed down lateral dribble muscle up a floater at the least out of the corners though.

I would expect almost the same type of scoring game on the court as MCW. Like Mike :D, he can get by his man in isolation sometimes, but against good defenders he is going to need a screen. He gets lower to drive then MCW does, but doesn't quite have the blowby speed. What he did better was pull up from 3 with a defender right on him, but I only saw that once. He used it beautifully taking advantage of the defender draped all over him while turning his body to create the room to pullup at full speed. He is a inch or two taller then MCW, but MCW would make up for it in verticle-athleticism. Like Mike, he did attempt a putback in the lane here and there. What mike does have on him is a midrgange floater. Not sure if Gbinije was just not using his midrange jumper/floater, or he doesn't have one. Brandon used a midrange floater pullup as a SG, Mike used it as a PG, so it can be used at either position. Gbinije was tentative, and unagressive to try to score in canada though. Maybe he was told to run a point guard role early on, but at his speed with his dribble, I was really surprised to see him shoot so little. One of the coaches will give him a push to try to score more, no need though with our scoring heads to do it before midseason. Let him grow comfortably as we have that luxary. Like MCW the potential is there that we should be patient with him trying to do to much once he steps out off the ledge.

Well done. Much thanks for the summary. I agree that SU needs a little more aggression from him. Seems tentative in finding himself and his game on the court. But still, his dribble looked good and the few times he was pestered by smaller point guards, he did well shielding the ball with his body. He should just isolate and bring that stuff into the post until he gets double-teamed. Will shoot right over peanut guards. Imo, I think this might be his game as opposed to MCW, with the speed and agility in penetrating. Not saying G can't do this, but MCW might have another gear than G.
