Dean's summer retirement and the flailing of Guthridge showed growing problems with the concept of Family only. That was magnified when Roy stayed at KU, leaving Doherty as the only choice, because Larry Brown was dirty and Dean always thought George Karl far too brash, and Dean's Favorite, Phil Ford, had a little bottle problem.  Then Dean made it all MUCH worse by forgetting (it was not public at the time that dean was already in dementia) that he had give his OK to Doherty bringing his entire ND staff with him, therefore having no former UNC players as assistants. Dean then publicly verbally attacked Doherty for turning hugs back on the Family, and as I predicted then, it was over for Doherty no matter what he might do.
