Absolutely bonkers, imo. As a fan, I suppose you're not gonna feel too bad about some billionaires gambling on a coach. This is clearly not earned (KW3 should probably get a cut here) but this is what the current FBS salary landscape is becoming.

Kind of crazy off one good year but look at all the schools that might have openings. USC Lsu Florida perhaps Vpi. Guess they got a little scared.
More than a little. Highest paid coach not named Nick Saban now. Unreal

I think he’s worth it, remarkable turnaround from what was expected with what Dantoni handed over

Imagine what the ACTUAL university could do with $100 million? Talk about pissing your money away. The Chinese are going to wipe the floor with us eventually and we will deserve it.

He's had one good season - the current one - as a head coach. I assume he's winning primarily with the former coach's recruits. According to Wikipedia, this is his head coaching record:

Pretty sickening, actually. That so many in this country need sports wins so badly that they would spend that kind of money on what is essentially a hobby should be nauseating.
I hope they can't claim this as a charitable tax deduction.

When and where does it end? This is Michigan State making this move. It's been 50 years since (SU grad) Duffy Daugherty was there and they were nationally relevant, and in 3 days they will again move to their usual place when OSU smokes them. This is insane.

He beat Michigan two years in a row. Shows you what they care about.

They could easily lose the last 2 games, this weekend they are a 20 point underdog. Walker could go pro and skip the meaningless bowl game.

To me, he'll always be the guy who broke Rutgers' 21 game losing streak in Big 10 games.

Glorified gym coach (credit to OttoMets ) at BIG STATE U. The sooner this system all "blows up" the better. $550m in dead money to otherwise incompetent coaches when there are over 160k homeless college students out there. It's gross. NIL was the next to last nail in the coffin.
And it isn't even a new thing; rather, it is a matter of current magnitude. Long ago, otherwise fine academic institutions sold their souls to be in the entertainment business. Make no mistake; that's what bigtime sports really is. It's not an extracurricular activity. It isn't even a sport like some at SU where the U gives the entire team $10-$15K per year and the participants have to buy their own uniforms. We are talking the big money sports where the coaches and players provide entertainment for the masses and thus income to the university. In return, the coaches are compensated like rock stars and the players get things that members of minor sports teams at the same university can only dream of.

There is a reason why the majority of the Top 50 universities in America do not play P5 sports. Among those that do, schools like the Vandy's and Northwesterns of the world don't take it seriously enough to the point where they are ever going to make the playoffs. They at least "sort" of put it in its proper perspective.

Completely forgot he coached the Jags haha

Seems MSU fans are defending it by saying they didn't pay Saban back in the day and it bit them in the ass so they don't want to make the same mistake. But Saban was more proven as a coach than Tucker

Yeah, but -

Obscenely rich alums don’t get to cheer vicariously for those 160k homeless college students, so FFF em.

Sigh.

MSU has been smoke and mirrors all year.. got an elite RB. Escaped NeB, Indiana, Mich. lost to purdue. Might end up 10-2 but really a 7-5 type team.

I think Northwestern has thrown in. Didn't they build a super expensive football facility right on Lake Michigan?

Probably not getting them to the playoffs, but I'd guess taking it more seriously than several other schools in the B1G.

Yep, you're right about Northwestern. In fact, I think their coach is the third highest paid coach in the B1G, which is insane when you think about it. In my mind I think of when they weren't as serious.

It's very weird now. Each passing day I slide back to the NFL and away from CFB. It's creepy frankly - building these temples to football at a State University. It's becoming culty. Guess that mirrors the weird polarization in our country - whatever your politics are.

I'm looking down the gun barrel at $75K per year to send my son to a decent college. And I read about this crap at MSU? Makes me sick to my stomach.

So... made a bit of a decision this week about a lot of things in my life that don't bring me pleasure. Not quite there yet with SU Football - but it's getting close. It's extremely hard for me to imagine Syracuse EVER making the CFB Playoffs - MAYBE if it gets to 16 teams.

FWIW - the one big decision I made is to stop following politics entirely. I feel both parties are revolting and mirror each other - it's all about the money. Kinda like college football.

A $100M coach at a State University? We are an idiocracy.

If we eventually get to 16 teams, our goal as a program should be to reach the ACC title game once a decade... and to expect to be in the ACC divisional race through at least the first 2 months of the season. Is that too much to ask?
