He must have been, while watching the HBO "Real Sports" piece on the Arkansas HS football coach who does not punt on fourth down, who does not kick-off after scores - he uses onside kicks - and who refuses to try to catch punts by the opponent.

In one game he scored four times in the first quarter before the other team even touched the ball.

I have to admit.

It's very intriguing stuff.

Made me think of the Maine game where the opposing coach successfully went for it many times on fourth down in the Dome.

please, that guy is old news!

kidding. i'm glad he's getting noticed more and more.

all goes back to david romer's academic paper about it (his wife is christina romer, former obama economic advisor - his big idea now is charter cities, interesting guy)

no HBO at our house. the only premium cable we'll ever get is if Bravo goes premium groan.

coaches who want to run the ball should love this strategy - you only need 2.5 yards and a cloud of dust.

kelley is the rare coach that doesn't let wishful thinking about the greatness of kickers mess up his thinking.

i just want coaches to break out of the bad habits for how they frame things

"forced to punt" no you're not

"take the points" you can't just take the points, you have to make the kick

"don't take points off the board" that might be exactly what you're doing by not trying to score a TD

althought kicking the ball to the other team was the only offense the giants had.

It's truly wonderful when such complex things as basic math start to pop up in game strategy.

;)

Yes, the piece I think refers to the academic analysis.

I think the most interesting thing he does is onside kick after each score.
