A thought from the Marshall game.

As mentioned in a prior post, I only saw the second half when we were so obviously conserving our energy (for what ??) and coasting.

During the time I watched, yes, we were in control, but the game dynamics had shifted from us to them. If they made a couple of their treys earlier it could have been a very different result.

So anyways, my thought is this, Jimmy only flips out of the Zone when we are behind and desperate. Why not flip out of the Zone, or at least put on the press, when game momentum is changing even if we happen to be ahead at that point ?

I never seem to see that.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt. The zone was working. Why risk losing by switching defenses?

He pressed in the first half, when ahead slightly. We went 22-6; fame over.

Because he doesn't want controversy over which defense is better. If the press and/or m2m were proven effective for longer stretches... then he has a harder job explaining 40 minutes of birdwatching.

Do you intentionally wait until you see the word "defense" in a post to make a comment? We know it is your bread and butter.

He's been using the press this year to put away weaker teams early in the game.

He did it against Marshall, and he also did it against Colgate. I'm sure it was done in other easy games as well.

I expect that in the BE season, we may only see it proactively used against DePaul, PC, and USF. Other than that it will likely be used as a last resort comeback defense.
