UConn Football Coach Paul Pasqualoni Talks About Joe Paterno
Like a lot of coaches from the Northeast, including new Staten Island Sports Hall of Famer Kevin Coyle, now with the Cincinnati Bengals, Syracuse was that entry point from small-college football to the major level. Azzinaro and Stoutland crossed over for a season in upstate New York, coaching together on the SU staff in 1999, before Stoutland departed for Michigan State.
“Jeff was actually very instrumental in getting me hired at Syracuse,” said Azzinaro. “We coached together in ‘99 but we had coached against each other for a bunch of years.
“I don’t think to this day I would have gotten the job at Syracuse if it wasn’t for Jeff.”
Stoutland had wrapped two runs at Southern Connecticut around a graduate assistant stint at Syracuse before landing at Cornell. He returned to Syracuse in 1997 and those three years with the Orangemen sent him on a steady climb. Michigan State was next, followed by Miami.
