Boom! Shyheim Cullen Verbals to Syracuse During Visit This Weekend (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse added the first linebacker to its Class of 2015 on Saturday when Lowell (Mass.) High School's Shyheim Cullen verbally committed during an unofficial visit.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior becomes the 14th member of Syracuse's rapidly growing class, and the first commit to play linebacker as a primary position. Fellow pledge Dana Levine is the only other commit who could see time at linebacker. He said the Syracuse coaching staff plans to work him out at defensive end and outside linebacker.
Cullen, who is also SU's first commit from Massachusetts in this class, was the Merrimack Valley Conference Division I Player of the Year last year after recording 60 tackles and 12.5 sacks. He is unranked by the major recruiting services.

Shyheim Cullen Commits to Syracuse (bostonherald.com; Ventura)
Lowell coach John Florence told the Herald earlier this evening that Boston Herald All-Scholastic linebacker Shyheim Cullen has given a verbal commitment to attend Syracuse in the fall of 2015. Cullen is the first player from Massachusetts to commit to Syracuse since 2009 when Lawrence Academy quarterback Charley Loeb signed.
Cullen was hoping to avoid a long, drawn out recruiting process. Syracuse allowed him to bypass that.
"They were the first school to give me an opportunity, they believed in me," said Cullen, who received interest from BC, Maine, Miami, Purdue and Rutgers among others. "I went up to the school and loved everything about it. It's a great school with a great coaching staff."
A 6-foot-1, 215-pound with 4.5 speed, Cullen was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Merrimack Valley Conference Large. He registered 60 tackles and 12.5 sacks in leading the Red Raiders to the Division 1 North semifinals last year.
"He's a great player, a great kid and we're very happy for him," Florence said. "He has the size, speed and physical ability that coaches are looking for. Another D1 coach told me that they were impressed with the way he pursued the ball, he always seemed around it and those are things you can't teach."
Andrejas Duerig (72)
Newest SU OL Commit Andrejas Duerig Expected to Play Center for Syracuse (PS; Bailey)
Andrejas Duerig's arrival at Syracuse a little over a year from now will mark the completion of a journey full-circle.
As a middle schooler, a much smaller Duerig started his football career as a center. On his way to committing to the Orange during an unofficial visit Tuesday, Duerig bounced around from tight end to offensive guard to every defensive line position. Even after transferring from Lowell (Ind.) High School to Mount Carmel (Chciago, Ill) High School in January, and after SU offered on April 2, Duerig saw himself as a guard at the college level.
It wasn't until his unofficial visit that the coaching staff informed him otherwise.
"It kind of took me by surprise a little bit," Duerig said, "but it all made sense with what they were saying. They had the other personnel for right guard, right tackle. They needed a center and they saw my athleticism as an athlete."

Mount Carmel's Duerig Headed to Syracuse (southtownstar.suntimes.com; Long)
A relative newcomer to the area recruiting scene, rising senior Andrejas Duerig transferred into Mount Carmel from Lowell, Indiana, and has decided to verbally commit to Syracuse.
“It was really just how great the education and the staff as a whole was, they are beyond great,” Duerig said. “It is a lot like Mount Carmel, where the atmosphere is educational and has family values along with football.”
It was the first time that Duerig had seen Syracuse’s campus and it was impressive for the 6-foot-4, 280-pound prospect.
“I love the mixture of all the new and old buildings. It’s very nice,” Duerig said. “I like how it is on a hill and it’s just an overall beautiful facility.”

Scott Graham Interview (elevenwarriors.com; Citro)
James Otis “Scottie”Graham came to Columbus from Long Beach, N.Y., and had a memorable career as an Ohio State running back in the late 1980s and early 90s.
Graham was listed as a fullback but played more like a tailback, despite sharing the offensive backfield with a veritable “who’s who” of Buckeye running backs—guys like Robert Smith, Raymont Harris, Butler By’Not’e, Dante Lee, Carlos Snow, and others.
...
How did you end up leaving Long Beach, N.Y. to play at Ohio State and what drew you to the Buckeyes?
SG: It was an opportunity to graduate, number one. I knew the Ohio State degree carried a lot of weight, through the alumni. There was an alumnus named Jerry Brownfield, he was a guy from Great Neck, and he literally kept bugging Earle Bruce's staff. And (former OSU assistant coach) Chuck Heater used to go "there's a guy you got me to see." Jerry would keep on asking Ohio State, "how come you guys aren't recruiting this guy?" Syracuse would pop up. Penn State would pop up. Temple, Rutgers, and schools like that would pop up.
And Pete Johnson went to my high school. Most people don't know that. Pete Johnson played for my high school football coach. So I wasn't the first Long Island guy to go to Ohio State.

Sterling Renaissance Festival May Not Open This Summer; Public Asked for Donations (PS; Doran)
A popular Central New York attraction for nearly 40 years - the Sterling Renaissance Festival - may not open this summer unless it raises $300,000 by July 5.
Festival management is turning to the public to help raise that money through acampaign on the festival website which asks supporters to each give $100, and through an online crowdfunding site, Rockethub.
Incentives range from two free day passes for $100 donors to season passes up to sterling engraved "Forever Passes" to $5,000 donors.
Owner Doug Waterbury said the $300,000 gap is not indicative of the festival's overall financial picture, and is merely needed to cover the operating expenses required to get it open.
"We have almost no debt, but still have operating costs,'' he said. "It's very straightforward and simple."
