ACC News

With Louisville officially joining the ACC last Tuesday, the league took over the title of best basketball conference in America—maybe ever.

How stacked is the new ACC?

  • Out of the 15 teams, all but two (Clemson and Virginia Tech) have been to a Sweet 16 since 2003, and all 15 have made the NCAA tournament in that time span.
  • Five of the last 12 national championships have been won by schools now in the ACC.
  • The ACC has four teams in the top 10 of our most recent preseason rankings for the 2014-15 season.
The competition during the conference season will be highly entertaining, but until it begins, the bragging rights game for ACC fanbases could be just as competitive. You have four schools that have been historically dominant along with several others with storied histories.

4. Syracuse (5): Jim Boeheim is the oldest coach in the ACC at 69. He doesn't like questions about retirement, but they come up every year. Syracuse has a coach-in-waiting, assistant Mike Hopkins, and that provides some stability. Hopkins has more responsibility than your average assistant already, and not much will change stylistically when he takes over.

So that stability will be good. But more so than the final three teams on the list, Syracuse could be in rebuilding mode the next few years after losing Tyler Ennis, C.J. Fair and Jerami Grant.

Jerami Grant Struggles in Second Straight Summer League Game with 76ers (PS; Carlson)

Former Syracuse star Jerami Grant's summer league performance through his first two games won't quiet any of the questions about whether he left the Orange a year too soon.

Grant started the second game of the summer league season for the Philadelphia 76ers but was a non-factor for the second time. Philadelphia won 84-73 over Oklahoma City, evening its record at 1-1.

Grant fouled out of the game after playing just 11 minutes and 14 seconds, scoring three points, grabbing two rebounds and turning the ball over twice. He made 1 of 2 shots, 1 of 2 free throws and missed his only 3-point try.

In the opener of the summer league season, Grant scored one point and grabbed two rebounds.

Donte Greene Scores 13 in NBA Summer League Debut with Brooklyn (PS; Waters)

Former Syracuse University player Donte Greene scored 13 points in his NBA Summer League debut with the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday in Orlando.

Greene's 13 points and seven rebounds helped Brooklyn to a 101-81 winover the Indiana Pacers on the first day of competition in the NBA's Summer League. Greene also had two assists in his 21 minutes of action.

Arinze Onuaku, another former SU player, is on the Pacers' summer league roster. Onuaku, who split last season with the D-League and two stints in the NBA with New Orleans and Cleveland, did not play in Saturday's game.

Greene, who spent all of last season in the China Basketball League, is looking to return to the NBA after what has basically been a two-year absence. Greene spent four years with the Sacramento Kings, who selected him with the 28th pick in the 2008 NBA draft.

Massive House Party in Pompey Requires Police Helicopter to Break Up (PS; Eisenstadt)

The massive house party that police needed a helicopter to help break up Wednesday night was the kind of thing that only happens in movies, said Emily Jureller, a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius who was among the more than 500 people at the party.

"It was not about drinking," Jureller said. "But it was about being a part of something big and being able to say you were there in the moment."

The party, at 7598 Ashlind Circle in Pompey, was shut down by police around 11 p.m. Revelers threw a glass bottle at a patrol car and police called for backup. About 20 officers from several departments helped break the party up.

Deputies called in the county's helicopter, Air1, to provide light as they sent people on their way. Jureller said it was surreal to see it overhead.
