Chris McCullough Fights Reputation as a Lazy Player (PS; Ditota)
In an internet age of instant analysis and constant condemnation, Chris McCullough hears his detractors.
Syracuse University's freshman forward does not exert himself enough. He fails to squeeze sufficient energy from his willowy 6-foot-10 frame. He lacks the 'motor,' in basketball terms, to match his abundant athletic skills.
His mother, Brenda Ryer, sometimes joins that chorus of critics. She rarely watches Chris play, because both she and her son acknowledge her presence at games makes him nervous. But for those games she witnesses, she sees what her son lacks. Sometimes, she'll send him a halftime text to motivate him.
"I've said that I want you to play with more intensity," she said. "Because he does play effortlessly. It may be easy for him. But it looks like it's easy and he's not pushing as hard as he can."
Those assertions baffle McCullough, who can recite a litany of criticisms aimed at his perceived lack of enthusiasm. He hears it from media members. He hears it from coaches.

JB Discusses a Wide Range of Subjects in Interview with ESPN's Andy Katz (PS; Waters)
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim sat down with ESPN reporter Andy Katz for a 10-minute interview as part of Katz Korner, which aired on ESPNU Friday night.
Boeheim discussed the prospect of a 30-second shot clock, the NCAA's early deadline for players entering the NBA draft, and his up-close view of LeBron James in recent years along with several other subjects in the 10-minute interview. The interview was taped two days ago in North Augusta, S.C.; site of this weekend's Peach Jam, an annual AAU event that draws the top high school prospects and the top college coaches to the coastal town.
Boeheim said he favors shortening college basketball's 35-second shot clock. The Atlantic Coast Conference and the American Athletic Conference will experiment with a 30-second clock in exhibition games this season, but Boeheim doesn't think that's going far enough.
"Thirty is a compromise for me,'' Boeheim said, who would like to see the NCAA adopt the NBA's 24-second clock. "We've played internationally and we've never come close to a shot clock violation.
"We can't sell 24 because every college coach doesn't think he has enough players to play that,'' said Boeheim, who added that most coaches think just two schools would benefit from 24 seconds. He didn't name those schools, but Kentucky would obviously be one with Duke perhaps being the other. "If you want more scoring in the game, shorten the clock. That's all you have to do.''

Tyler Ennis Suffers Through Poor Showing in NBA Summer League Game (PS; Waters)
Tyler Ennis and C.J. Fair, two former Syracuse teammates, faced each other in the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League on Friday.
Fair's Dallas Mavericks came away with an 88-62 win over Ennis and the Phoenix Suns. Fair scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds to help Dallas to the win.
Ennis, meanwhile, suffered through his worst outing of the Las Vegas Summer League. The point guard who left Syracuse after his freshman year failed to score in the loss to the Mavericks. Ennis missed all six of his field goal attempts. In addition, Ennis had just one assist against five turnovers.
Fair, who is hoping to make the Dallas roster as an undrafted free agent, played a solid game. He went 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 at the foul line.

Johnson played for the Lakers last season, starting in 62 of 79 games, averaging 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds during one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
