i understand that everybody wants to hire an SU lifer who would stay here for a decade and push away all competing options. Logic says that ain't happening. As such, our best plan is to do what it takes to hire the best chance at a "sure thing" young gun, and overpaying to do it. If we're correct that the guy succeeds, we get a big buyout from a powerhouse school that funds the next hire, which we can do from a stronger position.
It's a simple business case and the relative cost of our top choice vs somebody in our ideal budget isn't that vast.
Hopefully the powers are thinking this way.
