Here are the details on the “Net Points” averaged by each scholarship player on the Syracuse team this season. I compute the minutes, (M), per game for which the player was available. Thus Jeremy Grant’s average is over 21 games because he was suspended for one game. On the other hand Tyler Roberson, BJ Johnson and Ron Patterson have played in only 14, 8 and 8 games each but they’ve been available for all 22 games so their average is per14, 8, 8 games. All the other statistics: points, (P), rebounds, (R ), assists (A), steals, (S), blocks, (B), missed field goals, (MFG), missed free throws, (MFT), turnovers, (TO) and personal fouls (PF), are per 40 minutes of play. You add the “positives” (P,R,A,S,B) and subtract the “negatives”, (MFG,MFT,TO,PF) and you have “net points” (NP). Subtract MFG and MFT from P and you have “offensive efficiency” (OE). Then subtract OE from NP and you get “floor game” (FG). I’ve put the players in four sections: Centers, Forwards, Guards and “Glue Guy”. I’m calling Michael Gbinije a “Glue Guy” because he’s a hybrid forward and guard. I’m including BJ Johnson as a forward, even if he could play the “2”. I’ll post the progressive numbers after each month of the season, but not the numbers for that month alone. The end number might be slightly different from my “Net Points, etc. posts because here I’m figuring out the averages for each element and then adding the results together after rounding each figure off, rather than totaling the net points and figuring that number per 40 minutes. Minutes are simply per game but it’s the games the player was available. If he was suspended or injured, I’ll note it. If a plyer didn’t play simply because JB chose not to use him, I counted that game so we’ll have his true average minutes per game. CENTERS Rakeem Christmas After November 28.3m 24.7p 13.4r 1.6a 0.9s 3.5b = 44.1+ 7.1mfg 2.8mft 2.1to 5.6pf = 17.6- = 26.5NP 14.8OE 11.7FG After December 30.5m 22.7p 11.6r 1.1a 1.1s 2.9b = 40.1+ 5.1mfg 2.1mft 2.8to 4.3pf = 14.3- = 25.8NP 15.5OE 10.3FG Chinoso Obokoh After November 5.0m 13.3p 9.3r 1.3a 4.0s 2.7b = 30.6+ 0.0mfg 0.0mft 1.3to 10.7pf = 12.0- = 18.6NP 13.3OE 5.3FG After December 2.9m 10.5p 10.5r 2.1a 3.2s 2.1b = 28.4+ 0.0mfg 0.0mft 1.1to 8.4pf = 9.5- = 18.9NP 10.5OE 8.4FG DaJuan Coleman is on the shelf until further notice. They’ll probably be annoucnign soon that we won’t be seeing him until next year. Comments: Rakeem is committing fewer fouls and playing more minutes. His per 40 production has gone down a little because we played more good teams in December than in November. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him maintain his current level of performance in January as we are playing the lower end of the ACC. Chinoso has excellent numbers in limited play (38 minutes total) mostly when games against overmatched opponents had already been decided. And we haven’t seen him play in practice, which JB has. And we aren’t in the Hall of Fame. I still have to wonder if Chris McCullough playing center really gives us more than Obokoh would when Christmas is out. I amazed Chino couldn’t even get into the Cornell game. Surely getting him ready to be the back-up center should have been a priority in November and December. Instead he seems to be the forgotten man on this squad. FORWARDS Chris McCullough After November 32.8m 18.7p 10.2r 1.4a 2.2s 3.0b = 35.5+ 4.9mfg 2.6mft 2.8to 3.2pf = 13.5- = 22.0NP 11.2OE 10.8FG After December 30.8m 14.0p 9.8r 1.7a 2.5s 2.9b = 30.9+ 5.1mfg 2.8mft 3.2to 3.6pf = 14.7- = 16.2NP 6.1OE 10.1FG Tyler Roberson (has missed 2 games to injury) After November 20.8m 12.5p 9.6r 1.4a 1.9s 0.5b = 25.9+ 10.1mfg 0.5mft 1.9to 1.4pf = 13.9- = 12.0NP 1.9OE 10.1FG After December 21.9m 13.1p 9.5r 1.6a 1.5s 0.9b = 26.6+ 7.3mfg 0.5mft 1.8to 2.0pf = 11.6- = 15.0NP 5.3OE 9.7FG BJ Johnson After November 21.0m 12.4p 12.1r 2.2a 1.3s 0.6b = 28.6+ 8.6mfg 0.3mft 1.3s 1.3pf = 11.5- = 17.1NP 3.5OE 13.6FG After December 14.6m 11.8p 10.3r 2.3a 2.1s 0.6b = 26.7+ 8.8mfg 0.8mft 2.1s 2.1pf = 13.8- = 12.9NP 2.2OE 10.7FG Comments: Chris McCullough ‘s performance has sharply declined and it’s almost entirely in the area of scoring. He’s not missing many more shots: he’s not getting them off. Tyler Roberson has dramatically improved, although much of that is his spectacular game against Louisiana Tech when he had 14 points and 17 rebounds. But that potential people saw is starting to reveal itself to the rest of us. BJ Johnson put up some interesting floor game numbers against lesser opponents but McCullough and Roberson can do better. If BJ wants more time he’s got to shoot his way into it and so far he hasn’t been capable of it. GUARDS Trevor Cooney After November 33.2m 12.3p 2.2r 2.4a 2.0s 0.0b = 18.9+ 6.4mfg 0.6mft 1.4s 0.4pf = 8.8- = 10.1NP 5.3OE 4.8FG After December 35.6m 14.8p 2.9r 2.6a 1.8s 0.0b = 22.1+ 7.2mfg 0.3mft 1.6s 1.6pf = 10.7- = 11.4NP 7.3OE 4.1FG Kaleb Joseph After November 32.8m 10.4p 4.3r 7.5a 1.8s 0.0b = 24.0+ 4.9mfg 1.0mft 4.3to 2.8pf = 13.0- = 11.0NP 4.5OE 6.5FG After December 32.6m 9.2p 3.7r 6.4a 1.9s 0.2b = 24.0+ 5.4mfg 0.8mft 4.1to 2.4pf = 12.7- = 8.7NP 3.0OE 5.7FG Ron Patterson After November 10.2m 4.6p 2.6r 6.6a 2.6s 0.7b = 17.1+ 9.2mfg 0.0mft 2.0to 2.6pf = 13.8- = 3.3NP -4.6OE 7.9FG After December 10.0m 7.7p 2.5r 6.6a 2.5s 0.3b = 19.5+ 9.2mfg 0.0mft 2.2to 2.5pf = 13.9- = 5.6NP -1.5OE 7.1FG Comments: Cooney has become more aggressive offensively: he is actually missing more shots and making more turnovers but the additional scoring has made it worth it. He’s also rebounding a bit more. Joseph’s acclamation to big time college ball has been a bumpy road, although he’s come along in recent game. Patterson has been a tremendous offensive liability although he contributes in other ways. His game is so focused on the three pointer, which he’s not very good at. He’s never even attempted a free throw in 130 minutes of play. Surely he can get closer to the basket than that. GLUE GUY Michael Gbinije (he was suspended for 1 game) After November 25.4m 9.4p 5.4r 1.9a 3.1s 0.3b = 20.1+ 7.2mfg 1.6mft 2.5to 3.5pf = 14.8- = 5.3NP 0.6OE 4.7FG After December 29.0m 13.2p 5.6r 4.0a 2.2s 0.2b = 25.2+ 5.4mfg 1.4mft 2.5to 3.4pf = 12.7- = 12.5NP 6.4OE 6.1FG Comment: Gbinije has asserted himself on offense, dramatically improving both his scoring and his assists. Both he and Cooney have become guys in whose hands you want to see the ball.
