Here are the details on the “Net Points” averaged by each scholarship player on the Syracuse team this season.

I compute the minutes, (M), per game for which the player was available. Thus Jeremy Grant’s average is over 21 games because he was suspended for one game. On the other hand Tyler Roberson, BJ Johnson and Ron Patterson have played in only 14, 8 and 8 games each but they’ve been available for all 22 games so their average is per14, 8, 8 games. All the other statistics: points, (P), rebounds, (R ), assists (A), steals, (S), blocks, (B), missed field goals, (MFG), missed free throws, (MFT), turnovers, (TO) and personal fouls (PF), are per 40 minutes of play. You add the “positives” (P,R,A,S,B) and subtract the “negatives”, (MFG,MFT,TO,PF) and you have “net points” (NP). Subtract MFG and MFT from P and you have “offensive efficiency” (OE). Then subtract OE from NP and you get “floor game” (FG).

I’ve put the players in three sections: Centers, Forwards and Guards. I’m counting Rakeem Christmas as a center, even though he starts at forward because he plays there as much as at forward and the forward who replaces him plays more minutes than he does. I’m including BJ Johnson as a forward, even if he could play the “2”. Michael Gbinije can play forward but he’s being used as a guard so that’s where I have put him. (As the season has progressed he’s been used in both positions but we don’t have enough guards so I’ve kept him there.)

The first installment is “after November” but I didn’t get to it until after the 12/3/04 Indiana game.
The second installment was done on 12/31 and therefore is accurately “after December. I was also tardy for the “After January” numbers, which include the 2/1 Duke and 2/3 Notre Dame games. The “After February” stats include the 3/1 Virginia game.

Comment: Coleman’s season is over so I’m listing him third.

All three centers have fouled too much, over 5 a game, meaning they’d foul out if they tried to play 40 minutes- and they’d be on the bench long before that happened. Last year they had a combined 226 fouls in 1810 minutes, 5.0 fouls per minute. This year it’s 177 fouls in 1266 minutes, 5.6 per 40 forty minutes. Big men usually get less fouls as their careers progress. Ours are getting more. It may be a reflection of the defense at the top of the zone. More than their own defensive technique.

Christmas has gotten more playing time due to Keita’s injury. He seemed to be developing into a major player, then went back into his shell. He played well in the Virginia game, (8p, 7r, 3b) so maybe he’ll start coming on again. Keita is having a poor senior year. He used to give us a little something on offense. Now he’s not even a put-back player. His injury may have something to do with that but Baye really hasn’t been very productive all year.

Comment: CJ Fair is also having a disappointing senior season, even though he’s the team’s leading scorer, as expected. He’s not rebounding nearly as well and is missing a lot more shots. 12.4NP per 40 is a low number for a senior star. He’s a good player but not a stud who can carry a team. That’s what we’re missing more than anything. His trying to be that kind of player isn’t working for him. But who else do we have?

Grant has certainly progressed from last season but he’s not the lottery pick he looked like he might become in the pre-season. He definitely needs to come back for another year so he can continue to progress. Tyler Roberson’s minutes and production have gone down as he’s facing better competition. Boeheim is clearly trying to grove him for a larger role as a reserve but it’s hard to do in close games. BJ Johnson clearly should have redshirted. I think Jim decided not to do that because he wasn’t sure what Trevor Cooney could give him and BJ was the best option if Trevor lost his way the way he did last year.

Comment: The big story in our great start was the play of our “T and T” backcourt, Tyler Ennis and Trevor Cooney. Their numbers have seriously declined from early in the season as we’ve played better completion and the opposition has adjusted to what they were doing. Cooney’s scoring has gone down considerably. He’s not missing more shots per game: he’s just not getting as many shots. Tyler’s missed shots and turnovers are up since he’s had to do more of the scoring himself. And yet he’s not scoring more than he was: he’s just having to force the action more. Both are still good players but they aren’t NBA ready and they need more help form their teammates than they are getting.
