Here are the details on the “Net Points” averaged by each scholarship player on the Syracuse team this season.

I compute the minutes, (M), per game for which the player was available. Thus Jeremy Grant’s average is over 21 games because he was suspended for one game. On the other hand Tyler Roberson, BJ Johnson and Ron Patterson have played in only 14, 8 and 8 games each but they’ve been available for all 22 games so their average is per14, 8, 8 games. All the other statistics: points, (P), rebounds, (R ), assists (A), steals, (S), blocks, (B), missed field goals, (MFG), missed free throws, (MFT), turnovers, (TO) and personal fouls (PF), are per 40 minutes of play. You add the “positives” (P,R,A,S,B) and subtract the “negatives”, (MFG,MFT,TO,PF) and you have “net points” (NP). Subtract MFG and MFT from P and you have “offensive efficiency” (OE). Then subtract OE from NP and you get “floor game” (FG).

I’ve put the players in four sections: Centers, Forwards, Guards and “Glue Guy”. I’m calling Michael Gbinije a “Glue Guy” because he’s a hybrid forward and guard. I’m including BJ Johnson as a forward, even if he could play the “2”. I’ll post the progressive numbers after each month of the season, but not the numbers for that month alone. The end number might be slightly different from my “Net Points, etc. posts because here I’m figuring out the averages for each element and then adding the results together after rounding each figure off, rather than totaling the net points and figuring that number per 40 minutes. Minutes are simply per game but it’s the games the player was available. If he was suspended or injured, I’ll note it. If a plyer didn’t play simply because JB chose not to use him, I counted that game so we’ll have his true average minutes per game.

Comments: Rakeem ‘s numbers dropped slightly because of the increased competition. I think he’s actually been more impressive in January than before as he’s had some games where he’s been battling 7 footers. Chinoso has goodt numbers in limited play (59 minutes total) mostly when games against overmatched opponents had already been decided.

Chris McCullough (season-ending injury after16 games)

Comments: Chris McCullough is no longer available and Michael Gbinije has moved into the forward positon. Mike’s numbers haven’t really changed much since December, indicating that this is his natural positon. Tyler Roberson’s scoring has gone down, mostly because he’s shooting less and is thus missing fewer shots, (he’s abandoned that awful jumper). His rebounding has improved.

GUARDS

Ron Patterson

Comments: Cooney is scoring more but he’s also missing more shots, especially from the line, where he had been automatic. Kaleb Joseph’s output declined but the decline came in December, not January. What declined in January was his minutes, primarily due to defensive lapses. Ron Patterson’s mini8sule output declined across the board but more than any other stat, he’s committing more fouls.
