Here are the details on the “Net Points” averaged by each scholarship player on the Syracuse team this season, plus the best years of famous SU players of the past for comparison. I’ll make this post once a month.
I compute the minutes, (M), per game for which the player was available. All the other statistics: points, (P), rebounds, (R ), assists (A), steals, (S), blocks, (B), missed field goals, (MFG), missed free throws, (MFT), turnovers, (TO) and personal fouls (PF), are per 40 minutes of play. You add the “positives” (P,R,A,S,B) and subtract the “negatives”, (MFG,MFT,TO,PF) and you have “net points” (NP). Subtract MFG and MFT from P and you have “offensive efficiency” (OE). Then subtract OE from NP and you get “floor game” (FG).
We have some versatile players on this team. I’ll list Coleman and Okoboh as centers because that’s all they play. I’ll list Lydon has a forward because that’s ideally where we want him to be if the center can produce. Roberson is obviously a forward. I’ll list Richardson, who is a swingman, among the forwards. Gbinije will clearly be in the backcourt this year so I’ll list him there with Cooney, Joseph and Howard.
After December, (I’m not including the Pittsburgh game because it’s part of the conference season. This will summarize the pre-conference season):
CENTERS

Comments: Coleman’s numbers have gone down, surely due to the increase in the caliber of competitions, and especially the big men in the conference schedule. The biggest thing is that he’s committing more fouls, which makes it harder to keep him in games. Ironically, I think his best stretches of play this season have come in recent games. But overall, he’s still struggling. The same thing has happened to Obokoh but nobody notices because he doesn’t play.

COMMENTS:
Tyler Lydon has also struggled somewhat in the conference season, although he’s returned to his early season from the last two games. And his numbers really haven’t gone down that far. He’s having a fine freshman season over all.
Tyler Roberson has upped his game from 12.8NP to 15.2NP. He’s rebounding very well but he was before that. It’s really been small increases in rebounding and scoring More steals, fewer turnovers, and, believe it or not fewer missed free throws all helped.
Mal Richardson has also improved in conference play, although not as dramatically as I thought. Basically, he’s missing fewer shots and thus scoring more. He’s still playing the same game he has been all along, just having a little more success at it. He’s certainly hit some big shots and played very well down the stretch of games.
It’s really quite a group of forwards.

Comments:
Michael Gbinije’s numbers have gone down across the boards but they are still good and he’s clearly our best player. Not only is he facing better defenders in conference play but he’s facing more of them. He struggles more to get his numbers but he still gets them. And he’s our most spectacular player with his highlight film dunks, long threes, aggressive drives to the basket, etc. He’s fun to watch.
Trevor Cooney has been Trevor Cooney. He’s had some good games and some bad. I like the fact that he’s driving to the basket more and also taking some pull-up jumpers instead of just three pointers. But his overall numbers are down, primarily because he has had fewer assists and steals and committed more fouls.
Franklin Howard and Kaleb Joseph are both lousy shooters and their overall numbers fell off but Howard had a terrific game passing the ball today and appears to have a future with the team. Joseph, who is playing with the walk-ons has a very different outlook.
