Here are the details on the “Net Points” averaged by each scholarship player on the Syracuse team this season. Plus the best years of famous SU players of the past for comparison.

I compute the minutes, (M), per game for which the player was available. Thus Jeremy Grant’s average is over 21 games because he was suspended for one game. On the other hand Tyler Roberson, BJ Johnson and Ron Patterson have played in only 14, 8 and 8 games each but they’ve been available for all 22 games so their average is per14, 8, 8 games. All the other statistics: points, (P), rebounds, (R ), assists (A), steals, (S), blocks, (B), missed field goals, (MFG), missed free throws, (MFT), turnovers, (TO) and personal fouls (PF), are per 40 minutes of play. You add the “positives” (P,R,A,S,B) and subtract the “negatives”, (MFG,MFT,TO,PF) and you have “net points” (NP). Subtract MFG and MFT from P and you have “offensive efficiency” (OE). Then subtract OE from NP and you get “floor game” (FG).

I’ve put the players in four sections: Centers, Forwards, Guards and “Glue Guy”. I’m calling Michael Gbinije a “Glue Guy” because he’s a hybrid forward and guard. I’m including BJ Johnson as a forward, even if he could play the “2”. I’ll post the progressive numbers after each month of the season, but not the numbers for that month alone. The end number might be slightly different from my “Net Points, etc. posts because here I’m figuring out the averages for each element and then adding the results together after rounding each figure off, rather than totaling the net points and figuring that number per 40 minutes. Minutes are simply per game but it’s the games the player was available. If he was suspended or injured, I’ll note it. If a plyer didn’t play simply because JB chose not to use him, I counted that game so we’ll have his true average minutes per game.

Comments: Rakeem ‘s numbers dropped because we were facing some of the best teams in the country who had centers more the size of those he’d face in the NBA. He was still very productive and had probably the best year and SU center has ever had, especially considering that he had no real back-up, little support from his teammates and the refs refused to call all t times he was fouled for fear the other team would run out of players. I like Chino, but the jury hasn’t even been selected on him yet.

Comments: Tyler has been good at getting his hands on the ball all year. His scoring actually went down against the tougher teams but his efficiency increased: he was using far fewer shots to get his points. Now he needs to learn to consistently make that 12 footer. MIke played like an All-American for 4-5 games, then either ran out of gas or stopped asserting himself. We’ll need him to be a mainstay the next year the way Rak was this year. Interesting statistical oddity: his positives were twice his negatives and his net points were equally divided between his offensive efficiency and his floor game. BJ showed flashes of talent against lesser opponents. He’s going to have to do it against the good teams or his playing time will decline even further with the new people we’d got coming in. I can’t wait to see what a healthy Chris McCullough could do for a full year.

Comments: Cooney again slumped badly at the end of the season. We think of Kaleb Joseph and Ron Patterson being two inadequate point guards but Ron did something in the late going Kaleb did not do: improve., mostly because he stopped taking those three point shots with their unpredictable destinations. He also cut down on his turnovers.
