Sometimes I think that guys who really made it big time in the pros just don't thrive on these college staffs when it comes to recruiting.  There are probably a few good ones out there that aren't coming to mind, but it seems like it just isn't a great fit.  A lot of guys with a cup of coffee or too in the league, but stars?  You always think that having a superstar NFL guy like that calling on a kid is going to be a huge advantage, but I think it's outweighed by the difficulty of adapting to all the BS needed for recruiting.
 
When Tennessee hired Chuck Smith to be their D-line coach they thought they'd struck gold, and that didn't work out either. 
 
It's nothing negative about the guys, it's all the BS that comes with recruiting.  Like said above, kissing the rings of high school coaches, kissing the asses of 16 year old kids.  How the hell does a guy like Rob Moore or Chuck Smith kiss the ass of a 3-star jackass high school junior that thinks he's something special.  I know if I was a former NFL all-pro it would be next to impossible for me to treat some prima donna with 1/10th the talent I had like he was incredibly special.
 
Recruiting is a unique ability, I just don't see many guys like that able to check their ego that way.
