And while your point about JB is a solid one, he's only here for a couple of more years and those years there will be a perception that he can be hampered by both the sanctions and the negative recruiting due to his being prominently mentioned in the sanctions as being an "out of control" coach.  Now we may disagree with the NCAA's report, but youngsters and their families may not.  We don't know yet how that will play out at this stage.  I don't think it will be significant, but we just don't know.  Then there is the unknown in terms of his successor.  Will the new AD anoint Hop as the successor?  If they do, will Hop succeed?  These are unknown factors.

Shafer could indeed possibly be in over his head.  I, personally, think he may be.  But the expectations, from me at least, is lesser than my expectations for the basketball program.   And he already met my expectations for the football program in his first year as coach and with UVa being down, and with Wake, Pitt and BC at home going 4-4 in the ACC with Rhode Island, CMU, and USF as OOC opponents getting at least 6 wins and going bowling seems more than likely.

Again, as good as JB has been over the years, getting the team to the S16 next year is also certainly doable.  But it depends largely on both DC2's health and KJ's improvement.  I have no doubt JB will integrate Richardson, Diagne, and Lydon into a decent rotation off the bench.
