Taken from Division II stars with 2 years of eligibility left. Doing so provides us with quality backups in case of injury or in-semester transfer, if that foolish rule isn’t changed!

Yes, because D II stars want to sit in the bench and become practice dummies for the rest of their playing careers, all while paying a big tuition bill. Makes perfect sense.

I do agree that we need better practice players though. Our practices need to be with players who challenge and make each other better. We used to have bona fide players - some with speed, some with strength, athleticism and were competitors, not just for possible playing time but to imitate our opponents in practice.

Athletics or the university through financial aide could find a way to fund those scholarships. If we sought players who are seeking a graduate degree and qualify for graduate financial need.
Plus we would have additional space for others who wish to pay the tuition.

If a player is on scholarship, they are not a walk-on. Why not just get the best athletes we can based on our scholarship limits?

Honestly, is your original post a troll post?

Why not just allocate all of the scholarships to actual legit players who are rated by recruiting services and not to walk-ons and charity legacies?

Then you wont need to worry about where the walk-ons come from since they will be so far down the depth chart? This approach would make sense.

SU is quite capable of putting together financial aid packages for walk-ons. They may not be full rides, but they can make the cost of attendance affordable.

Could probably just fill out a roster with all legit scholarship players, but in this day and age you’d probably have to play more guys to be able to do so.

Lots of D-2 schools provide scholarships. Why walk on and not play, while you pay.

Athletic Department funds all scholarships. Only 13 are allowed. Also, unlike many of the other sports, the scholarships can’t be split.

If a player is on athletic scholarship they are not a walk-on, but can they be on an academic grant or scholarship of some kind? I would assume so.

I don't think many of our walk-ons are paying full retail price for their schooling.
Actually, not many SU students are paying the whole shot.

To give a sense of how schools work around it….I committed late in the spring of 2000 to the University of Maine for hockey, but they didn’t have any remaining “scholarships” for me. The head coach at the time, Shawn Walsh (RIP), said don’t worry about it, the school would take care of me. I’m from NY so I was out-of-state. Still, the entire year cost my parents $1,100

13 scholarship guys on the roster, so what if most 5 or 6 (or 7 or even 8) are only 3 star rated. They are probably better than most D2 players. So what if they all leave through the portal, bring in another set. Never know you might find a real gem in the rough. Has to be better than having only 10 recruited guys and still lose half (or more) every year.

Take scam. Inflate the cost 50%. Rebate 25% under the guise of financial aid and scholarships.
