"Syracuse always chokes in the first round."

I hate that my work computer doesn't let me see pics

Most wins in round of 64 since tournament expanded in 1985

Kansas 28
UNC 27
Duke 25
Kentucky 23
Syracuse 21

Where's UConn? I thought they've been THE powerhouse since 1985.

To most of that fan base college hoops began in 1990

Why do we always hear about Richmond, (snicker, snicker) and Vermont, (tee-hee!) and Duke never hears about Lehigh and Mercer?

Do you need to ask that question? The answer is obvious.

The craziest part about Vermont is that it was a 4-13 game - not exactly the upset of the century. People remember it like it was a 2-15 matchup. The biggest reason for that, is that it was featured in the primetime slot on a Friday night so everyone was watching (and the game itself obviously had some drama). If that game was played at Noon on a Thursday it goes down as just another upset (much like UConn - San Diego in 2008, a 4-13 upset that was more enjoyable).

They were all played in New York so they don't count.

Still not elite.

And ESPN was doing a 24/7 show on Vermont and their coach later became one of their "experts".

If Lehigh and Mercer play Richmond and Vermont in a double-header, who wins?

Four titles and eleven final fours gets you lot of equity.

Was in Burlington, Vermont last week and as if it wasn't a tough enough week for a 'Cuse fan, the local tv station kept promo'ing a half hour special celebrating the 10 year anniversary of that one.

Maybe a better stat would be win percentage in the first round, or something. Because our 21 clearly includes several years where we were not in the tourney, due to bans or snubs. So the delta of 7 wins from us to Kansas would be monstrous if we were in the tourney every single year. That would be 7 more first round upsets in 30 years, which is quite huge. In reality there have been far fewer. Another interesting stat, getting more to who the true power programs are would be number of Sweet 16's since 1985. I don't know where we'd fall on that list, but there is a chance it would be the same list as this.
