One more word of advice. It's very possible for a family from somewhere else to be very unhappy in Central or Western New York. In the hey day of Xerox and Kodak, I saw it happen many times. These people were constantly disappointed because it wasn't like home. They couldn't do the things that they were used to doing with the people they are used to doing it with. Our family learned to do and enjoy the things that were available and that the Upstate New Yorkers did. 1. Consider skiiing as a family activity, either downhill or cross country. It's an absolute blast and kids learn it easily. It'll shift your perspective on snow from dreading it to anxiously awaiting it. 2. The fishing is extremely good. It's just different from the bass fishing and ocean/surf fishing you do in the Deep South. Lake Ontario is the best. The Finger Lakes are good but require a higher skill level. And there are all sorts of streams and smaller lakes. 3. Ice skating, especially for kids. In our old town of Pittsford, there were ponds that would ice over. Kids would spend hours out there, many playing pick up hockey. 4. Lacrosse is a fun sport to watch and to play. SU is the best team, but there are some good DIII schools in the area that are a lot closer. (Hobart? ST John Fisher? RIT? Nazareth?). 5. Minor League Baseball. The Rochester Red Wings are a AAA franchise in the International League. I always like their stadium and thought it was family-friendly. You are watching almost Major League quality at the fraction of the price. 6. Minor League Hockey. Rochester has the Amerks. I went a few times and was put off by the antics of the crowd which I thought was there primarily for the fights on the ice.
