– Sophomore midfielder Oyvind Alseth, freshman midfielder Julian Buescher and redshirt junior defender Tyler Hilliard have been named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

More: 2014 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team

Alseth and Hilliard are finance majors in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. Buescher is a student in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The trio helped guide the Orange to a 16-4-1 record in 2014 and a berth in the NCAA's Round of 16 for the second time in three years.

Alseth tied for third on the Orange in scoring with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists). He tallied a career-high five points, including the first two goals of his career, in SU's 4-1 victory against Bucknell on Oct. 21. Alseth also notched the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of Syracuse's second-round NCAA Tournament win versus Penn State.

Buescher was an All-ACC Second Team performer in his first year with the Orange, and received TopDrawerSoccer.com and College Soccer News Freshman All-America honors. He started 20 games and was credited with five assists. Three of his five helpers were on game-winning goals.

A 2014 Capital One Academic All-District selection, Hilliard started 18 games on defense last season. He helped anchor a Syracuse backline that tied for fifth in the NCAA for the fewest goals allowed (12) and led the ACC with 12 shutouts. Offensively, Hilliard contributed three goals and one assist. He scored two goals, including the winner, in the Orange's 3-1 home victory against Wake Forest on Oct. 10.

Nine schools that compete in men's soccer were represented on this year's All-ACC Academic Team. Notre Dame led the way with five selections, including midfielder Patrick Hodan who was named the ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average during his academic career.

SUNY Canton to Host Men’s Soccer Match Between Syracuse University and Ottawa Fury
Story Links
Canton, NY –SUNY Canton will play host to an exhibition soccer match between Syracuse University and the Ottawa Fury on Saturday. Syracuse is a NCAA Division I member, while the Fury compete professionally in the North American Soccer League (NASL).

The match, originally schedule to take place on the campus of St. Lawrence University, is a planned exhibition within the non-traditional spring season for Syracuse, while Ottawa is using the match as part of their pre-season training. The NASL season kicks off in full the first week of April. In 2014, Syracuse finished the season with an overall record of 16-4-1. They finished as the ACC Tournament Runners-Up, and advanced to the NCAA Second Round, where they lost in overtime to No. 11 Georgetown University. The Fury finished their 2014 season with a record of 7-14-6 for 27 points and an eighth place finish in the NASL.
Along with serving as a friendly exhibition for both programs, the match is also geared towards raising more awareness and support for soccer in the North Country.

"We are incredibly excited that there is an opportunity for such a high profile match to be played on our campus," Head Men's Soccer Coach Tim Penrod said. "Syracuse has established itself as a national power in recent years, and Ottawa is always a constant threat to any team they compete against. For the local colleges, the match will provide a great learning experience. For the area youth players, they will have the unique opportunity to see current and future professionals in a setting they normally would not be able to get to. The entire community owes a huge 'thank you' to Bob Durocher for setting up the match and allowing us to host such a special event."

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 PM on Saturday. The match is free to the public, and youth soccer players are encouraged to attend. For additional information on the game, please contact Tim Penrod at (315) 386-7422 or by email at penrodt@canton.edu.
