At 7-1-0, the Orange is off to its best start through eight games since the 1984 season when the club also opened with seven wins in its first eight matches. The Orange dominated the Bearcats from the opening whistle. In the first half, the Orange outshot Binghamton 8-2, controlling the ball in the attacking third for the majority of the period. Forward Alex Halis had two shots on goal in the stanza, while Oyvind Alseth and Julian Buescher continually ensured the visitors maintained possession by rarely allowing Binghamton to cross the midline. In the second half, Syracuse's hard work in the offensive end paid off as Emil Ekblom broke the stalemate in the 65th minute, scoring the match's only goal off a cross from Jordan Murrell. Murrell started the deciding play by carrying the ball into the attacking third. He then sent a pass to the front of the goal that deflected off Binghamton goalkeeper Robert Moewes to a waiting Ekblom, who slotted the ball into the right side of the net for his fourth game-winner of the season and second in as many games. Ekblom's goal was all the Orange needed as it turned in another superb defensive peformance. Syracuse allowed just five shots in the contest. All were on goal, but junior keeper Alex Bono was once again up to the challenge. He stopped all five shots to earn his ACC-leading seventh shutout of the season. The Orange finished the match with an 18-5 advantage in shots, 12 of which were on frame. The Orange also earned eight corners, while Binghamton managed only one. Moewes had a terrific night in goal for the Beacats, single-handedly keeping them in the match. He recorded a career-high 11 saves, including an athletic stop on a header by SU senior captain Skylar Thomas in the 71st minute. Thomas' attempt was ticketed for the back of the net until Moewes deflected it up and over the bar. Up next for the Orange is ACC rival Virginia. Syracuse hosts the Cavaliers on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. Match Notes: Bono now has 25 shutouts and 30 career victories. He is just the third SU goalie to reach the 30-win plateau, joining Joe Papaleo (44) and Chris Whitcomb (36) ... Murrell's assist was his team-leading fourth of the season and the 17th of his career, putting him in a tie for eighth place on SU's all-time assists chart with Scott Owsiany (1984-87) ... Syracuse has won three straight against Binghamton and five of the last seven meetings.
