SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Oyvind Alseth scored for the first time in his Syracuse career, netting two goals and recording an assist as the No. 5 Orange (13-2-0) defeated the Bucknell Bison (6-9-0) by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange is the first team in the NCAA to reach 13 victories this season.
The offense came very early and very often for the Orange. Just 47 seconds into the match,
Chris Nanco intercepted an errant pass from Bucknell goalkeeper Mike Lansing just outside the box and fired the ball into the empty net, giving Syracuse an early 1-0 advantage.
Later in the first half, in the 22nd minute, Alseth sent in one of the 10 corner kicks the Orange were awarded in the first half, and found
Emil Ekblom just outside the six yard box who headed the ball just inside the front post past the keeper, extending the Orange lead to 2-0. The goal was Ekblom's seventh of the season and sixth game winning goal.
In the second half, the Bison gained some momentum, getting the ball deep into the attacking end with long runs down the sidelines. In the 56th minute, Ben Derleth created a turnover at the top of the box, controlled the ball off to his right, and fired a shot past Orange goalkeeper
Alex Bono into the right side of the net, cutting the deficit in half.
Just two minutes after Bucknell had got on the board,
Korab Syla and
Julian Buescher completed a nifty give-and-go on the left sideline, culminating with Syla finding enough space to send a cross into the box that found the head of Alseth, who headed the ball past Bucknell goalkeeper Clarke Fox who came in to relieve Lansing late in the first half.
Alseth found the back of the net again in the 63rd minute, when he and Ekblom capitalized on a counterattack for the Orange, and drove a shot home into the right side of the net. It was only the second time this season a Syracuse player had scored more than once in a match.
The Orange outshot Bucknell 12 to 8, and earned 11 corner kicks as opposed to just four by the Bison. Bono played all 90 minutes for the Orange and recorded three saves.
Syracuse travels to Raleigh, NC this weekend to take on the North Carolina State Wildcats in an ACC matchup. The match will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
Match Notes: With five points (two goals, one assist) Alseth recorded the most points by an Syracuse player in a match this season … The Orange has outscored its opponents 17-3 following losses since 2012 … The Orange has won 20 consecutive matches against non-conference opponents, including all nine from this season.
