So are we basically the 2021 version of the ageless MSU teams that ran gauntlet preseasons, entered the tourney with 10-12 losses but ground through the tourney because they were battle tested? Frankly I don’t remember a preseason like this…

Or are we just not very good?

I fear the latter, because I don't think we have the personnel to address the main shortcomings this team has.

But hopefully it is the former, and your MSU comparison proves apt.

MSU hasn't missed a tourney since 1996. The only time they've had an SRS rating less than 10 during that run was last year and it was 9.8. I guess the only season that really sticks out when looking at their history is 14-15 when they were preseason top-20 team, lost to Duke (nat champs), KU (top 10), and ND(1 pt loss, top-10, 3 seed) in Nov/Dec and went on to a 7 seed and the final four. Other than that they have a lot of top-5 seeds and when they don't they usually get beat in the 1st or 2nd. Maybe 11-12 when they lost to UNC and Duke to start the season and then their 4 NBA players pretty much smoked everyone en route to a 1-seed.

This season Syracuse has a 7.5 SRS so far and have given up the same number of points that they've scored.

I think we'll find out in conference. If we run through a conference that's not that great and finish near the top, we're option 1. If we don't, we're option 2.

If we are comparing our OOC schedule with what we will see in the ACC, here’s my opinion:

- Nova is the best team we will play all year. Duke has the talent to get there but we know how games with Duke usually go. We won’t play anyone better than Nova.

- Auburn is a notch below the above 2, but to me clearly better than any ACC team not named Duke.

- Indiana could probably finish top 4 in the ACC this year.

- VCU is solid but unspectacular. They are better than the bottom of the ACC clearly right now.

- AZ State isn’t good

All in all, we probably already played 2 of the best 3 teams we will play this year. Indiana will be better than most ACC teams. We already have a win at Florida State (always a tough game for us).

JB does usually have his teams playing better by February. We’ve already seen the defense improve and I do think Cole will make shots eventually. You could argue that Jessie, Jimmy and JG have exceeded most reasonable fan expectations.

We won’t have the athletes this year. But in a down year in the ACC, and you could argue we played 4 of 5 toughest games already (Auburn, Indiana, Nova, @FSU). So as long as we keep improving there’s no reason we can’t get to 19 wins or so.

I think we are somewhere in between. Win out the non conference and it's a good step towards conference play. It's gonna all depend on Buddy getting healthy and finding his shot, Cole finding his shot and more importantly- getting something from Benny this year.

I agree that we're somewhere in between. I've been enjoying seeing JB figure out how the new personnel work together and adjust to fit their strengths and weaknesses, which is something I felt was lacking the last few years. Obviously, I wish we had more wins but I think the tough opening schedule forced him to adapt. I think we'll be a dangerous team in March.

Where would Colgate finish in the ACC this year?

Our starting 5 is OK but miscast. There is nothing behind them.

We've likely performed as would be expected of a perennial bubble team.

If we had 2 more legit good players things would be very different. Late collapses on nights we play well might be a common theme this year.

Gate plays at Pitt Tonite and is favored by 4 points. Does that help you understand that these teams are dangerous?
yeah! 95 pts in 33 minutes dangerous!
(and that pitt/colgate line has nothing to do with how miserable pitt is)

Helps me understand that Pitt is not a very good basketball team.Colgate is a decent team that played a great game against the Orange but I don’t think they would be favorite on the road against any other team in the ACC.

They lost a tight game at NC State 77-74, they won at Cuse and they are favored by 4 at Pitt. They can compete in the ACC.

What do you mean by compete? You think they could play .500 ball in the ACC?
This year might be one of the worst in years for ACC basketball and I still don’t think Colgate would vie for a top seed in conference.Decent team that could beat alot of teams if they are stroking the three, but Im not buying them as a top team.

LOLOLOLOL stop the nonsense. The three games after they smashed Cuse...LOSS to Harvard, Niagara and Northeastern. Oh, and they threw in a beatdown from Cornell just before the Cuse game for good measure.

Northeastern is equal to Colgate in the Patriot, both very good. Harvard beat them with a half court shot at the buzzer. Cornell haven't got a fix on them yet, they seem decent. Purple Eagles have Paulus, a coach K disciple.

The three games after Niagara beat Colgate? They LOST to Monmouth, Fairfield and Eastern Michigan. You can spin this any way you want. Colgate is a middling D1 program and they walked into the Dome and man-handled Cuse. This Cuse team just isn't very good. You can keep trying to sell yourself on this team but it's just fools-gold.

It’s going to be very interesting what this team does. I think it’s one of the worse teams we’ve had in the Boeheim era if I’m being honest.

That being said, I think they win the next 3 games to go to 8-4 into conference play which is fine with me. On top of that the ACC is the worse it’s been in forever too. The only team that scares me is Duke. Also the only team ranked in the top 25 is Duke. When is the last time that had happened? So if we were going to have a bad team this is the year to do it because I think we can still do something in the conference. UNC is above average but not great. Virginia is pretty bad this year tbh, we just beat FSU. I think we can do well in conference. We just need to make sure we finish strong these next 3 games and go into conference 8-4 and I think we can get 18-20 wins on the season if we do that

That's Bubblicious baby!
