was it me or did it seem that MTSU had more guys with the post score "he can't check me" face than any team we played this year? I know a guy pulled it after scoring on LYdon which Tyler responded to the very next time on the floor, and I thought Frank Howard tossed a little back after a similar event.

I may be imagining as I just thought all their pre-game comments showed total lack of respect for our program. They hadn't heard of us or followed us, knew we played zone but not worried.

Glad they got to use the "can't check me" look for all 20 of their baskets.

That one MTSU player who head bobbed skipping backwards down the court really seemed to light a fire into our players, particularly Lydon. Would love to hear what he said to Tyler because he truly seemed ticked off. It was great seeing Lydon so aggressive. He was so smart about it, finding DC , taking it to the hoop himself , rebounding, saving wayward rebounds, passes from going out of bounds - fun to see a young player develop confidence .

He also immediately tried to viciously dunk on someone on the next trip down the court after that.

I had to laugh near the end of the game too when there was an obvious "intentional" foul where the MTSU guy grabbed our guy (can't recall who) and the MTSU guy looked at the ref with a look of disbelief he was called for a foul. He just intentionally mugged our guy and he was like "What?!" after the whistle blew.

One thing MTSU did well early on though is drew charges. We need to do a little more of that when in position. Our guys just back up when bumped hard or run into. The refs won't call that a charge and in many cases, called it a block when it really wasn't.

It was Foote that did the heavy trash talking early in the game, shaking his head at Lydon, telling Tyler he wasn't going to be stopped. He ended up with 6 points.

I was going to comment on this but didn't. For all the feel-good hype about MTSU, they looked like they were talking a lot of trash and their pre-game comments IMO crossed the line between confidence and dickishness. Not a hanging offense, but I didn't really feel bad for them when they took the gas pipe yesterday.

Edit: I should distinguish the players from the coach. Kermit Davis's comments were very professional, even gracious. When Raymond was asked about how it affected the team when he got his fourth foul, he said "I can't control what the refs call" (as if the foul on him wasn't obvious). Davis interjected and said the foul hurt, but didn't affect the result.

They seemed like a team that was too dumb to know that they are a sucky mid-major that was out of their league against a team like Syracuse.

They are probably still dumb, they are definitely still a sucky mid-major, but maybe at least now they have a better understanding of their place in the college bball hierarchy.

We will probably hear from them again... maybe 10 years from now.

I remember one player staring down Lydon who fell to the ground after being fouled going for a rebound. Who the heck stares a player down when their team is losing by double digits and they just fouled the guy?

MTSU was probably just trying to light a fire under themselves, but they seemed crazy disrespectful. Not the way I would approach it if I was playing a perennial power team and top 10 program of all time, but whatevs.

Foote also had the comments pre-game about how much better and consistent MSU was than Syracuse and so implied they wouldn't have trouble handling us. I mean, to some degree you can't blame these guys - they are trying to keep their own confidence going and of course they should fee like they can win. They had the best win of the tourney so far in handling MSU. Plus I'm sure all the media interaction is very new for these guys. Our players play in huge games with big media hype and responsibilities every week, these guys did it twice in their entire career, both were in a 2 day period last week.

Forgive them for they know not what they do.

Seems like an appropriate comment for this last week of Lent.

They'll always have Michigan State, when the stars aligned for them. But the contrast in styles between MSU and SU, and the quick turnaround, doomed them. I was surprised they even made a game of it briefly in the second half. They were damn lucky to get to 50.
