THE KICKING GAME (aka “Special Teams”)
Kickers
Seniors:
Juniors:
Sophomores: #92 Brady Denaburg 6-0 195 (was 180), #95 Ian Hawkins 6-0 210 (was 191), #41 Jack Stonehouse 6-1 199, #36 Max Von Marburg 6-0 195 (was 183)
Freshmen: #98 Jadyn Oh 6-1 165
The Andre Szymt era is over at Syracuse. He opened in 2018 by being the nation’s leading scorer, a first team all-American and the Lou Groza award as the nation’s best kicker in 2018. That was a lot to live up to and he never quite did, although playing for inferior teams didn’t help. Still, SU’s all-time scoring list is Andre Szymt first with 454 then Nate Trout 334; Field Goals Andre Szymt 85 then Cole Murphy 59; Extra Points: Andre Szymt 199 then Nate Trout 187, (from when we were scoring a lot more points). He may be replaceable, but he’ll be #1 on those lists for a long time.
Brady Denaburg, a 2 star from Florida who nonetheless was listed as the #9 kicker in the country by 247, (maybe kickers don’t get 3 stars), did the kicking off last year and showed a powerful leg and a confident manner that suggests he can put up Szymt-like numbers this year. “Was a perfect 44-of-44 on PAT attempts and 19-of-26 on field goal attempts as a senior ... Hit from 57 yards.” (Cuse.com) We’ll take that. Nunes: “He was good for 41 touchbacks on 63 attempts and only committed one out-of-bounds foul… He’s got big shoes to fill, but it seems like he at least has the leg power.”
Ian Hawkins, a PWO from San Diego was one of several inadequate punters we’ve used the last two years. He averaged 33.2 yards on 6 punts. That number won’t get you a 7th punt. Here were none last year. He’s trying to compete to be the punter or placekicker this year but will be unlikely to win either position. Break glass in case of emergency.
Jack Stonehouse walked on, not here but at Missouri after averaging 46.7 yards per punt at Chaminade HS in California. After a redshirt year in 2021, he averaged 42.4 on 46 punts. He then hit the portal and wound up here, where he’s the odds-on favorite to win the job this year. Nunes: “Stonehouse had 15 kicks inside the 20 with only four touchbacks. During the Spring game it was clear he had the strongest, most consistent league among the punters on the roster. He’ll start the season as the punter and Syracuse will look for him to clean up the issues that plagued the Orange the last two seasons.”
Max Von Marburg walked on last year from the world of Australian Rules football, where “he was the leading goal scorer award in the Riverina Football League’s under 17’s for the Turvey Park Bulldogs with 55 goals”. American football proved more problematic as he averaged a decent but not great 39.8 yards on 52 punts, with his performance declining as the year went on, (38.4 in ACC play, which was last in the conference).
Jadyn Oh got nothing from 247 but “4.5 stars from Kohl’s Kicking” per Nunes who said “Oh is actually the only listed pure kicker on the roster. Brady Denaburg and Ian Hawkins are listed as placekickers. While Denaburg is the presumed starter, Oh could be the first option Babers calls on if Denaburg struggles, despite the fact Oh is a walk-on.” (I’m not sure what a ‘pure kicker’ is – a kickoff guy?)
Snappers/ Holders
Seniors:
Juniors: #8 Justin Barron 6-4 231, #46 Tom Callahan 6-3 236, #43 Mike Midkiff 6-3 216
Sophomores: #61 Ethan Stangle 6-1 214 (was 196)
Freshman:
Just as the Andre Szymt era comes to an end, so does the Aaron Bolinsky era end. He was the nsapper for all those place-kicks.
Tom Callahan transferred here from Fordham, where they do a lot of place-kicks, (Brandon Peskin who transferred out, hit 12 of 17 field goals and 76 of 77 PATs for 112 points last year, (the Rams scored 49.5ppg, between 42 and 59 every game!).
Mike Midkiff backed up Aaron Bolinsky for three years and this is his chance to prove himself as a long snapper but he’s got strong competition.
Ethan Stangle was ranked 13th by Kohl’s for long snappers, (all these guys are 247 walk-ons). He red-shirted last year. Now it’s on with Callahan, Midkiff and Stangle. Denaburg and Stonehouse are just looking for efficiency and consistency, thank you.
Justin Barron held for placekicks last year and will continue to do, per the Colgate week depth chart.
Kick returners
Seniors: #85 DeMarcus Adams 6-0 182
Juniors: #2 Trebor Pena 6-0 190 (was 177)
Sophomores: #87 Donovan Brown 6-1 178
Freshmen: #83 Bryce Cohoon 6-2 187, #82 Darrell Gill Jr. 6-3 169, #23 Ike Daniels 5-11 188, #21 Muwaffaq Parkman 5-11 180
Pena returned 33 of 44 kicks last year and he’ll still be the #1 guy on both punts and kick-offs this year. I put DeMarcus Adams and Donovan Brown here as they are probably the fastest guys on the team, although Trebor is no slouch. This year I added the transfer Bryce Cohoon freshman Darrell Gill Jr. from the receivers and our young running backs #23 Ike Daniels 5-11 188, #21 Muwaffaq Parkman 5-11 180
or the same reason. But the kicks Pena didn’t return last year were retuned by Courtney Jackson, LeQuint Allen, Mario Escobar and Marlowe Wax. So flat-out speed isn’t everything.
Trebor Pena caught 22 passes for 203 yards, returned 12 kickoffs for 326 yards (27.2 avg) and returned 21 punts for 182 yards (8.7 avg) last year. But he never scored. The only touchdown he has scored for SU is that 98 yard kick-off return against NC State in 2020. He’s due, big-time.
Pena has an ‘owie’ for the Colgate game and, indeed, Adams and Brown are listed as our kick returners. Give them an opening and they might be gone!
We can go three deep in 3 stars or their equivalent or better at every position and have experienced leadership in many key spots. We’ve got an above average QB, a wide-out who will probably be in the NFL next year and an All-American candidate at MLB. This will be, at least our best team since 2018 and maybe 2001 or the McNabb Era.
