And here is a list of the players on this year’s roster but not on last year’s roster (star ratings from 247). (More on them in the sections on each unit of the team): Marcellus Barnes Jr. is a 3-star DB from Chattanooga. Adam Boeheim is an unrated OL from downstate, apparently not related to our famous basketball coach. Caden Brown is a 3-star ‘edge’ from Brooklyn Jayden Brown is a 3-star LB from New Jersey Travis Brown-Miller is an unrated OL from New Jersey Clark Calloway – the only thing I’ve been able to find out about him is that he’s DL from Georgia Duce Chestnut’s journey continues. Dino Babers first recruited him in 2021 and he was rated 4 stars by Rivals. We were told he was the highest rated recruit we’d had in at least a decade. 247 says he was a 3-star. He played here for two years, then hit the portal to see what he could do at a real national power like LSU. He appeared in 4 games, none after September and returned to SU. Maybe he is a 3-star. He’ll have two years left. Fadil Diggs Kyle McCord’s transfer here was the big news for the offense. Fadil Digg’s transfer from Texas A&M was the big news for the defense. He came with Coach Robinson from Texas A&M. He was a 4 star ‘edge’ as a high school recruit and as a transfer. He’ll be a senior. Fatim Diggs is Fadil’s brother. He’s a 3-star LB from New Jersey. KingJoseph Edwards is another 4-star edge from Georgia. Yes, ‘KingJoseph‘ is one word. Calvin Fowler is a walk-on DB transfer from Duquesne, who plays football at the FCS level. He’ll have three years left. Willie Goodacre is a 3-star OL from Texas. Devin Grant is a three-star transfer DB from Buffalo. He’ll have two years left. Patrick Grusser is a PWO QB from New Jersey. Ta'Ron Haile is a 3 star WR from New Jersey. Jaden Hart is a 3-star RB from Michigan. Isaiah Hastings is a 3-star DL from Florida who first went to Alabama, played in 1 game in two years, announced he was transferring to Missouri but we flipped him. He has three years left. Zeed Haynes is a WR out of Pennsylvania. He went to Georgia as a four star, appeared in four games and made one catch, then transferred here as a 3-star. He’s the same player. He’ll have four more years to sort it out. James Heard is a 3-star LB from New Jersey. He went to West Virginia, played in three games and transferred here. He has four more years. Jaylan Hornsby is a 3-star WR from New Jersey. Coach Robinson flipped him from Texas A&M. Codie Hornsby, (no apparent relation), is a 3-star OL from Texas who went to Grambling before transferring here. He’ll have two years. Malachi James is…guess what? A 3-star TB from New Jersey. Nakei Johnson is an unrated DB from downstate. Tim Johnson is a grad transfer linebacker who played for two DII schools in Iowa and came here to pursue a Master’s Degree in Advertising. I hope he gets it. Michael Johnson Jr. is the son of our co-offensive coordinator. He was a 3-star QB out of Oregon who originally enrolled in Penn State in January 1919, transferred to Florida Atlantic after the 2020 season and now here for his last two college seasons. Jackson Kennedy is a kicker who transferred in from Cornell. He’ll have two more years. Davien Kerr is an unrated ‘athlete’ from Connecticut. Jahide Lesaine Jr. is a 3-star LB from New Jersey. We flipped him from Kent State. Clarence Lewis is a 3-star DB from New Jersey who went to Notre Dame in 2020 and is here as a grad transfer. Braheem Long Jr. is a 3-star DB from New Jersey, Camden, in fact. That’s where Coaches Brown and Robinson come from. Kyle McCord is the big name among the new players. Having the starting QB for Ohio State decide he’d rather be the starting QB for Syracuse made national headlines. He was a 4-star from Philadelphia, (but born in New Jersey), and a 4-star transfer. Ibn McDaniels is another 3-star DB from New Jersey. Jackson Meeks is a 3-star WR from Alabama who played for Georgia the last three rather fun years. Xavier Miles is a 3-star DL from New Jersey. AJ Miller is an unrated QB from downstate. Joshua Miller is a 3-star OL from Virginia who went to Georgia for a year, then followed Coach Brown to SU. Stan Modo is a walk-on DL from Texas. Jordan Montanez is a PWO RB from Texas. Will Nixon is the son of our other Co-offensive coordinator, Jeff Nixon. I’m glad Will and Michael Johnson Jr. don’t’ play the same position. Will was a 3 star RB from Texas first went to Nebraska, then to Washington, where he played in the national championship and now on to join his father at Syracuse. He’ll have two years here. Michael Nwokocha is a 3 star DL from Texas. Nate Prater is an unrated walk-on DB from Tennessee. Noah Rosahac is a 3-star OL from Pennsylvania. Emanuel Ross is a 3-star WR from New Jersey per 247, although he was a 4-star when we recruited him. Justus Ross-Simmons is a 3-star WR originally from Rochester whose family went to LA and who wound up at Colorado State for two years. Vito Shevchenko is a 3-star OL from Vancouver. Mark Short is an unrated walk-on LB from downstate. Garvin St. John is an unrated walk-on LB from Illinois. Ja'Meer Thomas is a 3-star ‘athlete’ from Bennet HS in Buffalo, a former teammate of Rashad Perry, (see below under “Defensive Lineman”). Jamie Tremble is a 4-star tight end from Georgia but he’s not originally a Fran Brown recruit. He was to be the star of Dino Baber’s recruiting class and Coach Brown kept him on board. Savion Washington is a 3-star OL from Ohio who first went to Kent State and transferred to SU. He’ll have two years here. Marcus Washington Jr. is a cornerback from Georgia who went to Georgia, then to Louisville, then here to reunite with Fran Brown. He was a 4-star coming out of HS but is rated as a 3 star transfer. Elijah Washington-Baker is a 3-star tight end from Virginia. Maraad Watson is a 3-star DL from New Jersey. Da'Metrius Weatherspoon is a DL from Pennsylvania who had no rating coming out of high school but got 3 stars as a transfer from FCS Howard U. Jakhari Williams is a 3-star QB from Georgia. Yasin Willis is a 3-star RB from New Jersey. Dion Wilson Jr. was a 3-Star DL coming out of high school who “Spent three seasons at Arizona, then transferred to New Mexico State for one year before joining Syracuse in January.” He’s also ranked 3-star as a transfer. Grant Winter is an unranked PWO DL from Maine. Jacob Zuhr is a long-snapper from Florida. That’s 53 guys out and 60 guys in. I count 37 three stars and 6 guys who are or have been rated at 4 stars along with 15 walk-ons and 2 kicking game guys. That doesn’t seem like a sea-change. But some of these guys look pretty good and their ‘measurables’, (size, strength and speed), are impressive. And measurables are a big thing to Fran Brown, who has said “big guys tend to dominate little guys and fast guys run by slow guys”. I’ll go over those things in the unit descriptions below. I’ll end this section with an image that stands out. It’s of a guy who won’t even be on this team yet, a guy named Byron Washington who is part of the 2025 class, for which Brown already has 28 commits, (he’s already working on the 2026 class). Here is his picture: https://syracusefan.com/threads/ol-byron-washington-tx-committed-to-syracuse-3-23-24.180097/page-3#post-5022336 That’s what Coach Fran Brown has in mind for Syracuse!
