I was really impressed with the effort. The team had no quit.
We faced a nationally ranked team with arguably the best running back in the country and we basically went toe to toe with them.
Fournette is a classy young guy & is all that he is cracked up to be. The near sack pitch where he went for 46 was a really tough break for us, but it did show what a heady player he is to get himself into that position. He would have had a 300+ yard rushing day if the long TD was not called back & that was a penalty that really had little to so with the play. That is what great running backs do they hammer you until they get a seam & then they bust out for a big play. Anyways, kudos to him.
I think it's fair to say that we have the world's best fifth string QB. Zach opened up surrounded by butterfiles, but you could see them flying away as the game progressed, particularly in the second half. Estime did a nice job on returns and the long pass, but we need a couple of more speedy playmakers to complement him.
The D worked hard & played a really solid down to down game, but against the kind of talent LSU has giving up a few big plays were inevitable. The punt return really, really hurt, but the long pass after we closed to 24-17 was probably the game changer. Their receiver did a terrific job in coming back on an underthrown pass. Had they missed that play - who knows ???
I thought the staff did a great job in getting our guys to both bust butt and yet play with solid discipline.
I see no reason why we shouldn't get three more W's & a bowl bid, particularly if Dungey is a significant upgrade over a very solid Mahoney.
