As to the likely reason I think the more limited number of players the basketball program produces and the limited number of spots on the bets team are a partial reason. I think the fact that we play zone and the NBA doesn't has a lot to do with it. Beyond that, despite having the biggest arena, a Hall of Fame coach, a record streak of winning seasons, no competition from the pros, 5 final fours and 5 teams that reached a #1 ranking, (and those are ten different teams), we rarely seem to get the premiere recruits. Most of our heroes are good college players but borderline pro prospects. Why that is I'm not sure, but the two probations might have something to do with it.We haven't been able to afford to take chances getting into the sweepstakes for the #1 type recruit because we don't want to get in trouble again.

It's interesting to speculate what the reason is.  But I'm more interested in what JB would say the reason is.
