For the first time in forever, we have enough depth that we can pretty much go 3 deep with scholarship players. A lot of interesting position battles and some moves I will speculate on. This is how I see the depth chart looking at the start of spring camp. Boundary DE Robinson (RJr) Welsh (RJr) Johnson (Fr) NT Crume (Jr) Jones (Sr) Williams (So) UT Bromley (Sr) Raymon (RSo) Walls (RJr) Field DE MPB (Sr) Simmons (RSo) Manley (RFr) SLB Lynch (Jr) Vigille (RSo) MLB Spruill (Sr) Arciniega (Jr) Coker (Sr) WLB Davis (Jr) Washington (RFr) Boundary CB Reddish (Jr) Morgan (So) Whigham (So) FS Wilkes (Sr) Kelly (Jr) SS Eskridge (RSo) Desir (Jr) Field CB Lyn (Sr) Anderson (RSr) George (RSo) DE: MPB showed a good burst off the edge and spent a lot of time in the backfield. With a full offseason of S&C, I expect him to take a big step forward next year. Robinson has gotten some good playing time over the years and is a good run minded DE. Simmons is a solid athlete who has a chance to develop into a pass-rusher for us. Welsh has worked hard to earn his snaps and deserves more. Manley spent the year on scout but was one of our better recruits. I included Isaiah Johnson on the boundary end slot even though he is a DT recruit. With the depth we have at DT, an athletic freshman like Johnson might help the team and himself more by getting reps at end. DT: Undoubtably the deepest unit on defence going into next season. John Raymon sat out his sophomore season after transferring from Iowa with a dozen BCS offers. If he is the real deal, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jason Bromley get some snaps at boundary end to get our best four guys on the field. Bromley is really athletic for a big guy and is going to play on Sundays. I really liked Crume’s motor when he got in this season. He is going to be solid playing over the centre. Jones is a mountain of a man who will benefit from a season of S&C. Wayne Williams has been waiting to get here for awhile now and will be nearly impossible to keep off the field. Walls is a good depth guy. LB: A lot of questions make MLB the most interesting battle to watch during the spring. Will Spruill be, once again, moved to MLB? Will blitz specialist Cam Lynch get a look? Is Arciniega the real deal? Can the teams alleged hardest hitter, Coker, make the necessary improvements to be a 3 down MLB? All of these guys will get good reps and one will also end up starting at Sam. This position is primed for Arciniega to take during the spring. Dyshawn Davis is a terrific athlete who makes a lot of big plays, he keeps growing as a LB and I expect him to have a huge season on the weak side. Spruill is our best Sam linebacker and I believe by the end of the spring will be back there (if he is ever moved). Lynch has been first off the bench for both OLB spots and will challenge to earn a starting spot somewhere. Vigille is a good athlete who we haven’t had much of a chance to see yet. Same goes for redshirt freshman James Washington. Lots of reps to go around for these guys before another JUCO and two freshman get to campus in the fall. CB: A lot of talent returning at the CB position. Reddish was pretty solid all year and by the time he is off the hill will have been our best corner of the last 10 years. Lyn is another solid cover corner who really came on down the stretch. I’ll take these two guys against most other pairs of corners in the ACC. Anderson is solid against the run but sometimes has a hard time locating the ball in the air. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wayne Morgan or Julian Whigham take snaps away from him as the 3rd corner. Morgan looked good as a true freshman and I think may be a candidate to cross-train at safety ala Jeremi Wilkes. He has a big presence for a smaller player and might be needed there this spring. Whigham is a good, long, athlete who I wish was able to redshirt this season. Him and Jaston George will compete to get reps in the our dime packages. Tons of depth here, someone will be playing some safety. S: Eskridge is an explosive playmaker who will benefit greatly from increased starting reps. I think he is the only lock to start at one of the safety spots. Wilkes, Desir, the Juco Kelly, and maybe one of the corners will battle it out for the other spot. Wilkes is a veteran safety who mixes great plays with missed tackles. I like the upside of Ritchy Desir more at the FS spot and am excited to see what Kelly brings to the table. He looked like a solid cover player in his film. I believe Morgan and RB Devante McFarlane could be wild cards at the safety positions. Both are great athletes who have upper classmen log jams ahead of them at their respective positions. For anyone who harps on our lack of recruiting, just look at how athletic our defence is across the board come spring time. This is the most excited I have been about a SU defence in a long, long time. Go Orange!
